Statement by President von der Leyen following the OECD/G20 Inclusive Framework meeting on the Global Agreement on International Taxation Reform

I welcome today’s agreement on global tax reform.

This is a historic moment.

It is a major step forward in making our global tax system fairer.

The European Commission has been strongly supporting this international effort. I would like to thank Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni and his services for their tireless work on this.

Because asking big companies to pay the right amount of tax is not only a question of public finances.

It is above all a question of basic fairness.

We want a society in which there is one set of rules for all.

All companies have to pay their fair share.

I know that getting to this point has required difficult choices for many countries.

But we need to look at the long-term benefits of this agreement.

It will reinforce our social market economy and our Single Market.

I look forward to the G20 Summit at the end of the month, where we will finalise the details of this agreement.

Then, we need to implement it.

We will work closely with the Member States to ensure that the EU moves forward in a united manner.

In parallel, we will continue to crack down on tax avoidance and evasion.

Because we have to ensure that everyone pays their taxes in an equitable way.

We owe it to our citizens.
