Mamata Banerjee writes a personal tribute to Jayalalitha
An incident of death is always sad. We never want anybody to die. Rather, we wish for a long life. But, truth is to be accepted, however shocking it is.
There are some deaths which not only make us sad, but also rip our heart. Today is the day to talk about one such death.
Jaya ji could have stayed with us for a few more years. She infused a spirit of dynamism in everyone through her actions. Her passing is somewhat untimely.
While the passing of a lady of her stature is extremely unfortunate, Jaya Ji attained this position for herself through a life of struggle. It takes a lot of time and hard work to create such an illustrious legacy. Specially in ‘public life’. It needs a lot of strength, courage and toughness to to earn the trust of people by working for them and to lead a political party from the grassroots level to achieve success in Assembly as well as Parliamentary elections. Jaya Ji emerged a winner in all spheres – from the court to vote.
Extreme stress during the Lok Sabha elections compounded by the high level of blood sugar led to her subsequent illness. How we wish this final attack could have come years later.
I believe, her health started deteriorating when she was sent to jail in another State. The baggage of dishonour of being sent to prison in another State must have ripped her apart. The shock of dishonour had worn her out. The untimely loss may have been the result of that shock. I tried speaking with Jaya Ji when she was being taken to Bengaluru after being arrested on corruption charges, but could not do so. If that was possible, I would have advised her to take care of her health.
She returned from jail; she returned as a Chief Minister. But she could not regain her lost health. The Tamil people lost their Amma, the country lost a mass leader and AIADMK lost its matriarch. An empty space has been created in politics. With Jayalalitha, we have lost an able and courageous administrator.
We have lost a spontaneous, workaholic leader who was always full of fresh ideas. We may have had difference of opinion on ideological matters but I can never deny the perfection of her thoughts. She was always firm on her arguments and never bowed down.
I must share with you something no one knows. Jaya Ji was hospitalised when the demonetisation announcement was made. AIADMK’s Parliamentary Party leader and the present Deputy Speaker M Thambidurai, in personal conversations with Trinamool’s Parliamentary Party leader in the Lok Sabha, Sudip Bandyopadhyay a few days back, said that Jaya Ji supported our movement against demonetisation. She said that the movement taken up by Mamata against demonetisation is on the right track.
I have known about Jayalalitha for a long time. She has been the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu much earlier than I became the Chief Minister. She is very popular. I knew that after the death of MG Ramachandran, it was she who kept her party united. I came to know her personally much later.

1998. The first NDA government was in power at the Centre. Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the Prime Minister. Trinamool was a newly-formed party back then and we had seven MPs. We were supporting NDA. Jaya Ji played a pivotal role in making Atal Ji the Prime Minister. AIADMK had 29 MPs. Her support was crucial for Atal Ji.
We witnessed her power and influence back then. At NDA meetings, even Atal Ji would wait for Jaya Ji to arrive. He would even leave his chair for her. Only one other leader received such reverence. It was Chandrababu Naidu.
I first met jaya Ji during NDA times. She entered politics after a successful career on silver screen. But she adapted well with the political life with ease. Full-sleeved blouse, a saree covering her full body and a baggy coat. I had spoken with her couple of times after becoming Railway Minister. She spoke less but spoke so well.
After the Nandigram incident, I had visited Kerala with a delegation. During that visit I also dropped in at Chennai to meet Jaya Ji. Although I had heard she generally never meets outsiders at her residence, she called me to her residence. She took great care of us. I had taken a saree for her as a gift. It was a very plain saree. But she was very happy to have received it. She had said, “It is beautiful. The colour is beautiful.”
We had taken the initiative to make Dr APJ Abdul Kalam the President for a second term. I had spoken to her back then.
AIADMK won 39 seats in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Trinamool won 34. Together we could have been 73 in Lok Sabha. But that did not come through. Jalay Ji did not join the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance, though. The Deputy Speaker of Lok Sabha is from their party.
I have read the papers from Tamil Nadu at inter-state council meetings. They always made strong arguments. Such clarity of language, too. This is only possible for an able and strong-willed administrator like her. This is what makes ‘Jayalalitha’ what she is today.
Jayalalitha showed us how to command respect despite honouring the constitutional limits of a Chief Minister, solely through her strong will and gravity. It is difficult to match her personality in today’s times. One may not like her but they definitely cannot ignore her. And thus she stands out.
I understand how fighting against all odds feels like. I have been facing a volley of abuses and conspiracies myself for some time now.
Jaya Ji’s struggle is somewhat similar. She emerged a winner solely because of her political wisdom, administrative expertise and strength of character. History will always remember her as a strong female politician.

মৃত্যু সর্বদাই দুঃখের। আমরা কেউ কারও মৃত্যু চাই না। বরং বলি, ‘আরও আরও আরও দাও প্রাণ।’ মানতে না চাইলেও এই অমোঘ সত্যকে তবু মেনে নিতেই হয়।
কিছু কিছু মৃত্যু আছে, যা আমাকে শুধু দুঃখই দেয় না, মনকে তোলপাড় করে। আজ তেমনই এক মৃত্যু নিয়ে কথা বলার দিন।
আরও কয়েকটি বছর অনায়াসে আমাদের সকলের মাঝে থাকতেই পারতেন জয়াজি। তাঁর কাজের মাধ্যমে নতুন প্রাণশক্তি সঞ্চারিত হতো। এ চলে যাওয়া তো কিছুটা অকালেই ঘটল!
অনেক কাজের মধ্য থেকে হঠাৎ এমন হারিয়ে যাওয়া যেমন অতীব দুঃখজনক, তেমনই নিজের জীবনে সেই অবস্থান তৈরি করাও খুব সহজসাধ্য নয়। এইরকম একটি কর্মময় জীবন তৈরি করতে অনেক সময় লাগে। বিশেষ করে তা যদি ‘পাবলিক লাইফ’ হয়। মানুষের জন্য কাজ করতে করতে বিশ্বাসযোগ্যতা অর্জন, একটি দলকে নেতৃত্ব দেওয়া, নিচুস্তর থেকে শুরু করে বিধানসভা-লোকসভা পর্যন্ত তাকে জিতিয়ে আনা, কোর্ট থেকে ভোট সব লড়াই সাহসের সঙ্গে মোকাবিলা করা— এ সবের জন্য যে শক্তি, সাহস ও বলিষ্ঠতা প্রয়োজন জয়াজির তা ছিল।
লোকসভা নির্বাচনের সময় অতিরিক্ত পরিশ্রম, সেই সঙ্গে হাই সুগার মিলে মিশে ভোটের পর থেকেই ক্রমশ অসুস্থ হয়ে পড়তে থাকেন তিনি। এই চরম আঘাতটা হয়তো আরও ক’বছর পরে আসত।
তবে আমি মনে করি, ধাক্কাটা শুরু হয়েছিল তখন থেকে, যখন তাঁকে জেলে পাঠানো হয়— এক রাজ্য থেকে অন্য রাজ্যে। আমার মনে হয়, নিজের রাজ্য তামিলনাড়ু থেকে অন্য রাজ্যের জেলে নিয়ে যাওয়ার অসম্মানজনক চাপ জয়াজির অন্তরকে দুমড়েমুচড়ে দিয়েছিল। অপমানের সেই ধাক্কায় জর্জরিত হয়ে গিয়েছিলেন তিনি। আজকের এই অকাল পরিসমাপ্তির উৎস বোধহয় সেটাই। জয়াজিকে যখন দুর্নীতির অভিযোগে গ্রেফতার করে বেঙ্গালুরুতে নিয়ে যাওয়া হয়, তখনও তাঁর সঙ্গে কথা বলার চেষ্টা করেছিলাম। পারিনি। সম্ভব হলে বলতাম, সুস্থ থাকবেন।
জেল থেকে ফিরেছিলেন তিনি। ফিরেছিলেন ছেড়ে যাওয়া মুখ্যমন্ত্রীর চেয়ারেই। কিন্তু ‘সুস্থ’ হতে পারলেন কই? তামিল জনগণ হারালেন তাঁদের প্রিয় আম্মাকে, দেশ হারাল জননেত্রীকে, এআইএডিএমকে তাদের মাতৃসমাকে। রাজনীতিও রিক্ত হল। জয়ললিতার সঙ্গেই চলে গেলেন এক জন সাহসী দক্ষ প্রশাসক।
আমি হারালাম আমার পরিচিত সাবলীল, সর্বদা কাজ করে চলা, তাজা মনের এক রাজনীতিককে। চিন্তাধারার ভিন্নতা বা অন্য কিছু বিষয়ে পার্থক্য থাকা সত্ত্বেও তাঁর মধ্যে ভাবনার যে উৎকর্ষ দেখেছি, তা অস্বীকার করতে পারতাম না। তাঁর যুক্তিতে তিনি অবিচল থাকতেন, মাথা নত করতেন না, সেটাও লক্ষ্য করতাম।
একটা কথা না বলে পারছি না। এই নোটবন্দির দেশে জয়াজি তখনও হাসপাতালে। তাঁর দলের নেতা, লোকসভার ডেপুটি স্পিকার থাম্বিদুরাই দিন কয়েক আগে আমাদের লোকসভার নেতা সুদীপদাকে (বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়) ব্যক্তিগত কথাবার্তার সময়ে বলেছেন, মমতা নোট বাতিল নিয়ে যে আন্দোলন করছেন, সেটাই সঠিক পথ। জয়াজির দল এ ভাবেই আমাদের পথে সমর্থন জোগাল।
জয়ললিতার নাম আমি দীর্ঘদিন ধরেই জানতাম। আমি মুখ্যমন্ত্রী হওয়ার অনেক আগে থেকেই তিনি তামিলনাড়ুর মুখ্যমন্ত্রী। খুব জনপ্রিয়। এটাও জানতাম, এম জি রামচন্দ্রনের মৃত্যুর পরে তাঁর দল জয়ললিতাই ধরে রেখেছেন। কিন্তু আলাপ-পরিচয় ছিল না। হল অনেক পরে।
১৯৯৮। কেন্দ্রে প্রথম এনডিএ সরকার। অটলবিহারী বাজপেয়ী প্রধানমন্ত্রী। নবগঠিত তৃণমূল কংগ্রেসের সাত জন এমপি নিয়ে আমরাও দিল্লিতে। সমর্থন করছি এনডিএ-কে। অটলজিকে প্রধানমন্ত্রী করার ক্ষেত্রে জয়াজির বড় ভূমিকা ছিল সেই সময়ে। ২৯ জন সাংসদ ছিলেন এআইএডিএমকে-র। তাই জয়াজির সমর্থন পাওয়া সে দিন খুব জরুরি ছিল বাজপেয়ীর।
তখন দেখেছিলাম জয়ললিতার দাপট। অটলজি এনডিএ বৈঠকে নিজে কার্যত চেয়ার ছেড়ে দিতেন জয়াজিকে। তাঁর আসার অপেক্ষায় বৈঠক আটকে থাকত। এমনটা পরে আর এক জনের বেলাতেই দেখেছি। অন্ধ্রের চন্দ্রবাবু নায়ডু।
এনডিএ-র সেই আমলেই জয়াজির সঙ্গে আমার প্রথম আলাপ। রুপোলি পর্দা থেকে রাজনীতিতে এসেছিলেন জয়াজি। এসেই পুরোদস্তুর রাজনীতিক। ফুল হাতা ব্লাউজ, গা ঢাকা শাড়ি, ঢোলা কোট। আমি রেলমন্ত্রী হওয়ার পরে কয়েক বার কথাবার্তা হয়েছে। কথা বলতেন কম। অতি সুন্দর বাচনভঙ্গি।
নন্দীগ্রামের ঘটনার পরে সেখানকার এক প্রতিনিধি দল নিয়ে আমরা কেরল গিয়েছিলাম। সেখান থেকে চেন্নাই গিয়ে জয়াজির সঙ্গে দেখা করি। শুনেছি তিনি বাড়িতে সাধারণত বাইরের কারও সঙ্গে দেখা করতেন না। আমাকে অবশ্য বাড়িতেই যেতে বলেছিলেন। খুব যত্ন করেছিলেন। ওঁর জন্য একটি শাড়ি নিয়ে গিয়েছিলাম। সামান্য একটি শাড়ি তাঁর কাছে খুব অকিঞ্চিৎকর। তবু খুশি হয়ে নিলেন। বললেন, ‘‘চমৎকার হয়েছে। খুব সুন্দর রং।’’
এ পি জে আব্দুল কালামকে দ্বিতীয় দফা রাষ্ট্রপতি করার জন্য আমরা উদ্যোগী হয়েছিলাম। তখনও তাঁর সঙ্গে কিছু কথা হয়।
গত লোকসভা নির্বাচনে জয়ললিতার এআইএডিএমকে ৩৯টি আসন পায়। আমাদের তৃণমূল কংগ্রেস ৩৪টি। দুই দল একত্র হলে লোকসভায় সংখ্যাটি ৭৩ হয়। সেটা সম্ভব হয়নি। তবে জয়াজি বিজেপি-র সরকারে যোগ দেননি, সমর্থনও করেননি। লোকসভায় ডেপুটি স্পিকার এখন তাঁর দলের।
আন্তঃরাজ্য পরিষদে তামিলনাড়ুর পাঠানো কাগজপত্র পড়ে দেখেছি। বলিষ্ঠ বক্তব্য। তেমনই ভাষা। যিনি দক্ষ প্রশাসক এবং কাজের ব্যাপারে আত্মপ্রত্যয়ী— এই দৃঢ়তা তাঁর পক্ষেই সম্ভব। আর সেটাই ওঁকে ‘জয়ললিতা’ করেছে।
এক জন মুখ্যমন্ত্রী হিসেবে নিজের সীমাবদ্ধতায় থেকেও দৃঢ় মনোভাব ও গাম্ভীর্য দিয়ে তিনি তাঁর সম্মান আদায় করে নিতে জানতেন। আজকের দিনে এমন ব্যক্তিত্ব ক্রমশ বিরল হয়ে আসছে। কেউ তাঁকে পছন্দ বা অপছন্দ করতেই পারেন। কিন্তু জয়ললিতাকে অস্বীকার করতে পারেন না। এখানেই তিনি আলাদা।
প্রতিকূল শক্তির সঙ্গে লড়াই করে নিজেকে ধরে রাখা যে কতটা কঠিন, আমি তা কিছুটা বুঝি। অনেক আক্রমণ, অনেক কুৎসার বিরুদ্ধে নিজেও তো লড়েছি।
জয়ললিতার লড়াই তো অনেকটা তেমনই। তিনি তাঁর রাজনৈতিক চেতনা, চারিত্রিক দৃঢ়তা ও প্রশাসনিক দক্ষতা দিয়ে লড়াই জিতেছেন। মহিলা রাজনীতিক হিসেবে ইতিহাসে এটা হয়ে থাকবে তাঁর উজ্জ্বল অবস্থান।
