7-day Annual Art Exhibition 2016-17 of West Bengal State Akademi of Dance Drama Music and Visual Arts, Rabindra Bharati University opens with over 200 items of traditional and contemporary art made by promising and talented artists of West Bengal.

 Kolkata, January 27, 2017:

The 7-day Annual Art Exhibition 2016-17 of the West Bengal State Akademi of Dance Drama Music and Visual Arts, Rabindra Bharati University, held in association with the Rabindranath Tagore Centre, Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR), Ministry of External Affairs, Government of india, was inaugurated at the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR), here today.

 

The Exhibition was inaugurated by the eminent writer Prof. Nrisingha Prasad Bhaduri, while the Chief Guest was Shri Gautam Dey, Regional Director, ICCR, Kolkata. The inaugural function was presided over by Prof. Sabyasachi Basu Ray Chaudhury, Vice Chancellor, Rabindra Bharati University, and also Chairman of the Akademi. A number of awards and certificates of merit were given away by them to the successful artists.

 

This Annual Art Exhibition is organised by the Akademi every year with a view to encourage promising and talented artists of West Bengal – not only by arranging a display of their works, but also awarding them awards and certificates of merit, after all entries received are judged by separate panels of eminent artists for traditional art (patachitra, dokra, terracotta, wood carvings, mats, etc.) and contemporary art (paintings, drawings, graphics, sculptures and photographs).

 

This year, a total of 205 traditional art and contemporary art items were selected for display after eminent artists Subrata Chowdhury, Tarapada Banerjee, Bimal Kundu, Shukla Poddar and Diptish Ghosh Dastidar (for contemporary art), and Purnendu Dey and Partha Dasgupta (for traditional art) had judged all the entries received.

 

For the traditional art category, the recipients of awards were Tapas Karmakar (dokra), Imran Chitrakar (patachitra), and Gostha Baidya (wood carvings). For the contemporary art category, the award winners were Sukanta Adhikary (paintings), Amely Debnath (drawings), Amit Rudra (graphics), Jaladhar Naskar (sculptures) and Ritwik Mishra (photography), while certificates of merit were given away to Amitava Singha and Tanmoy Roychowdhury (paintings), Keshav Lahoti and Sandip Barui (drawings), Jannatul Royhana and Khokan Giri (graphics), Anupam Das and Partha Saha (sculptures) and Anneysha Chatterjee and Rajshekhar Paul (photography).

 

THE ANNUAL ART EXHIBITION 2016-17 IS BEING HELD AT THE ICCR’S BENGAL ART GALLERY, ABANINDRANATH TAGORE GALLERY AND THE SCULPTURE COURT, AND WILL CONTINUE TILL FEBRUARY 2, 2017, FROM 3 PM TO 8 PM DAILY. ALL ARE INVITED TO THE EXHIBITION.
