Calcutta Chamber of Commerce hosts a special talk session with, Consumer Affairs Minister (West Bengal) Shri Sadhan Pande on ‘Consumer Protection’

10th June’2017, Kolkata:

Calcutta Chambers of Commerce a pioneer institution for trade and business in India and globally organized a great evening talk show in search of excellence in business and effectiveness. Some times unplanned conditions can also generate a great output when thinkers and policy makers gets a free ride outside scheduled talk. Exactly that has happened today when minister got delayed due to unplanned urgent cabinet meeting.

The organizers opened the forum for the general discussion and which lead to some great brain storming session with all present in the room.

Even after over 25 years of enactment of the Consumer Protection Act, 1986, the law has not been able to achieve its avowed mandate of providing better protection of consumer interests in full measure.

It is high time that suitable amendments are effected in the existing legal regime to effectively meet the challenges thrown by consumerism and newer emerging markets and business models. To raise concern and lead a measure of seriousness the President of Calcutta Chamber of Commerce Mr. Dinesh Jain took this opportunity to curate a Talk Session with Shri Sadhan Pandey (Hon’ble Minister of Consumer Affairs, West Bengal Govt.) himself, deliberating on the agenda of ‘CONSUMER PROTECTION:Issues and Challenges’. Also present at the session were State’s top business leaders, leaders of civil society and senior members of the diplomatic core whose presence added special meaning to this occasion.

Stressing much on the emerging issues and challenges of Consumer Rights, Awareness and
Protection the session commenced with an opening speech by Mr. Dinesh Jain, “The Calcutta
Chamber of Commerce is the vanguard of development in trade and commerce serving since
186 years.

Through our programs we enable groups of academicians, professionals, bureaucrats, statesmen and businessmen to indulge in a regular practice of exchanging thoughts and ideas involving current socio-economic & political scenarios. As we at the CCC believe discussions and dialogues lead to enhancement and resolution of self and the country.

No matter what laws we have in our country but when it comes to its implementation and
applicability, awareness in the society is the prime area responsible to its success. Today,
growing globalized markets in world economy has developed a high sense to pinpoint the
structured laws in the development of consumer protection.

Despite modern technological advancements that have largely impacted on the quality, viability and safety of goods and services, the fact reveals that the consumers are yet victims of unscrupulous and exploitative practices.” When information is misleading and when regulations fail to prevent harmful side effects, the impacts of consumption can be negative. Price signals are one important form of information, but accurate labeling and other product information are equally important. The information now available to consumers, provided mostly by commercial advertisements, is grossly unbalanced.

The government has an important role to provide quality education, to enforce controls on misleading advertising, to ensure proper labeling of goods and to clarify their effects on health and safety.

Taking forward the session Hon’ble Minister Shri Sadhan Pande expressed his gratitude for the honor bestowed upon him by the Calcutta Chamber of Commerce and said, “The success of the consumer movement mainly depends upon the level of consumer awareness around the country.

The Government is definitely playing the role of a facilitator or catalyst. Whereas, the growth of consumer movement should also be voluntary effort involving the participation of one and all.” During his speech he laid strong emphasis on the different avenues and ventures the government is working towards to bridge the gap between consumers & consumer protection rights and to eradicate corruption with a more effective and transparent consumer awareness system.
