Precautions to take during monsoon

Dr. Anirban Chakraborty, Senior Consultant Physician, Narayana Superspeciality Hospital

Monsoon brings a lot of relief from the Indian summer. Unfortunately it brings with is lot of health hazards too. Proper precautions and understanding of these health hazards can keep us safe during this time.

A common problem during monsoon is gastroenteritis causing diarrhea and vomiting. As most of the bugs are water borne, they spread easily during monsoon. We have to be very careful while using the toilets, and make sure we use proper sanitation and wash our hands well after using the toilets, especially public toilets. Also, make sure we wash our hands before eating or putting our hands in our mouth. Be extra careful before handling any infants and always wash your hands properly before each contact with them. Most of the bugs causing gastroenteritis are viruses, so please do not take any antibiotics if you have one or two loose motions. The most important thing to remember if you have gastroenteritis is to replenish the salts and water. If however, this continues for a few days or you have fever or abdominal pain with it, please do see a doctor as this can be signs of diseases like hepatitis or typhoid.

Similarly, suffering from minor cold and flu like illness is quite common in the monsoon, especially if one gets wet. Take it slow when  getting in and out of air conditioned rooms or cars as that is the time when the maximum temperature difference occurs which can lead to symptoms of nose clock, dry cough etc. Take rest, paracetamol and plenty of fluids and fruit juice if you have a flu like illness. Most of these illnesses get better in 3-4 days on their own and generally you will not need to see a doctor. Please do not take any antibiotics over the counter as unnecessary intake of inappropriate antibiotics can pose substantial danger to your health at a later stage of life. If you are more unwell than normal, please see a doctor and take only the antibiotics prescribed by them for the full duration. Patients with allergic rhinitis and asthma can notice flare ups, so it is advisable to see your specialist if you experience such problems.

Those with a sensitive skin can have skin irritation or dermatitis if you have contact with dirty water, so it is best to avoid stepping on areas with stagnant dirty water. If you have symptoms of itching, redness or pain in your skin, please see a doctor without delay.

Monsoon in West Bengal brings the terror of mosquito borne diseases like Dengue and Malaria. The only way to be safe from these is to prevent being bitten by them in the first place. It is advisable to follow the municipality corporation’s advice and use common sense and avoid places with mosquito infestation throughout day and night. Use all sorts of protection, especially nets at night and repellants during the day. If you have unexplained high fever, please get to local healthcare facility for blood test to diagnose Dengue or Malaria. If you test positive for Dengue, that does not mean you will need to be hospitalized, but it is very important to be under expert supervision and continue having blood tests as per their advice. Most cases of Dengue will get better on its own, but the few that needs hospitalization should have prompt attention by experts in this field to prevent rapid deterioration. With these things in mind, enjoy the rainy season to its fullest.
