Ration for the visually challenged, speech and hearing impaired, prostitutes & HIV positive people

Through a new scheme, the Food and Supplies Department of the Bengal Government has decided to extend the benefits of the public distribution scheme, or PDS (commonly called ration) to the visually challenged, speech and hearing impaired, prostitutes and HIV positive people.

This was announced by the Food Minister on the occasion of World Food Day. ‘Food For All’, the theme of the World food Day celebrations, has truly been achieved in Bengal under the leadership of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. One of the biggest achievements of the Trinamool Congress Government has been the delivery of subsidised foodgrains to 91 per cent of the population.

Now, under a special scheme, subsidised foodgrains would be given to the often overlooked sections of society, like the visually challenged, the speech and hearing impaired, prostitutes and HIV positives.
