Narayana Superspeciality Hospital Howrah launches Bone Marrow Transplant Services

Kolkata 28th November 2017: Narayana Superspeciality Hospital Howrah today launched Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Services to provide quality cancer care and treatment at the most affordable rates in Eastern India. The BMT unit will be headed by a team of 6 highly qualified heamato-oncologists trained from across the country.

Bone Marrow Transplant is a medical procedure performed to replace bone marrow that has been damaged or destroyed by disease or chemotherapy. The procedure is very complex and it is done through transfusion of blood into the blood stem cells. It is usually done after chemotherapy or radiation therapy is given to a patient. There are two types of BMT – Autologous and Allogenic. Autologous transplant is done by using patient’s own blood cells and does not require a donor, while allogenic is matching donor based.

Present at the occasion, Mr R Venkatesh, Regional Director Narayana Health East, said, “We are extremely delighted to launch BMT services, which will be helpful for many patients. We have a dedicated team of experts specialized in oncology and hematology, well supported with state-of-the- art facilities and technologies, to give the best treatment to patients in the region.”

This facility will help people of this region get quality care for haematology and haemato-oncology.”

Also present at the launch was Ms Suma Bhattacharjee (late 40s), who suffered from multiple myeloma* and underwent BMT in Narayana Superspeciality Hospital Howrah this year. Suma came to Dr De in early 2016 and clinical examination concluded that she had multiple myeloma, which was affecting her bones, bone marrow and kidney. Post chemotherapy in 2016, she underwent autologous stem cell transplant and is now cured of her disease.  The Bally resident recounted, “When I was suffering from multiple myeloma my life was painful. Today I am thankful to the hospital and the doctors for giving me back a normal life.”

As part of the launch, the hospital has announced special packages for autologous treatment of Bone Marrow Transplant for multiple myeloma cases. Narayana Superspeciality Hospital Howrah aims to treat patients at substantially lower rates so that benefits can be passed on to the masses.
