An afternoon with Mr. Bruce Bucknell at GNIT – His Excellency British Deputy High Commissioner at Kolkata

What UK Deputy High Commisioner told to the students at GNIT on Wedness day is ultimate for success in career – “Be punctual and be honest to your commitments that’s the way to success what ever skill you have you should look for excellence that’s the way to success”. A outright gentleman with candid approach his excellency won the heart of the young guns.

Strives towards excellence in recent times has made many an educational institute initiate a bridge between academia and industry. The Government of India’s call to skill India has made many centres of learning sit up to the fact the true academic success is now also closely related to the industry readiness of their graduates. Guru Nanak Institute of Technology (GNIT) has several outreach programs for knowledge exchange and sharing to facilitate smooth synergy between academia, business, industry and community.

For addressing further this very topical and pertinent subject the Guru Nanak Institute of Technology held an interactive session on Employability and Skill Development for its students with the British Deputy High Commissioner to Kolkata, Mr. Bruce Bucknell on 14th February, 2018

Placement along with the training department work in tandem to reduce any gaps between academia and industry. The students get practical sessions for being work ready through orientation programmes, grooming sessions, mock interviews, summer internships for hands on experience in the professional world.

Most employers seek job specific skills; many recruiters also desire general skills which is also known as employability or soft skills. Employability training is very essential to his job search and prepares the new graduates for better placement.

“The UK and India have a long relationship and we are looking towards partnering India in the future particularly in Education, Skills and Entrepreneurship. The UK welcomes the brightest and best international students to our world-class universities. Studying in the UK is truly an international experience. And it is not that students always pay for the course themselves. The UK in India hosts the largest Chevening Scholarships and Fellowships country programme in the world”, stated Mr. Bruce Bucknell, the British Deputy High Commissioner to Kolkata.  The key elements which Employers in UK season from new aspirants are punctuality, expression of ability and intent, deliverables, express what one can offer and a sense of huamn quality through effective inter personal skills apart from tecknical skill and ability, stated Mr. Bucknell.

“ In this fast moving digital age a degree is not only about a first employment anymore but a life time of openings and potential for personal milestones. Recent trend states that graduates are employed on their cognitive skills and soft skill application in actual professional life. There is much that needs to be done to provide skill training to graduates that have real life application beyond academic classroom training. Many employers consider an understanding of a candidate’s social and emotional intelligence skills and personality type to be more important than their degree qualification.” stated, Mr. Simarpreet Singh, Honourable Director, JIS Group.

Also present in the occasion as students from different streams of JIS group, faculties and Prof (Dr.) Santanu Kr, Sen, Principal GNIT who stated “ We need to equip our young talents with right skills with the changing face and changing economy of India.”
