Pracheen Kala Kendra Holds Its Annual Convocation In Calcutta

Pracheen Kala Kendra held its 47th Annual Convocation Festival recently at the Mahanayak Uttam Kumar Manch Hall.

The importance of PKK towards growth, propagation, and patronage of Indian classical arts and artists is perhaps undebatable. The same was reflected in the speeches of all the guests if honor who addressed a sizable gathering during that occasion, the prominent among them being noted author Tilottama Majumder, sculptor Niranjan Pradhan, choreographer, Aloka Kanungo. Renowned musician Indrani Sen on her part dwelt on the continuity of classical music from the inception till the contemporary times.

This year, the Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to famed artist Shankar, while a special honor was conferred upon journalists Pathik Guha. Among dignitaries present during this convocation was renowned film director Prabhat Roy; Director, Eastern Zonal Cultural Center, Gauri Basu; Shobha Kosar, Registrar of the Center; Sajal Kosar, Secretary, PKK and Tabla maestro Anandagopal Bandyopadhyay and others.

In a crisp awarding ceremony that ensued, the Guru ML Kosar Award for Excellence, for those who passed the Bhaskar examination were handed out to Gautam Sengupta (Recitation),  Sayntani Chakraborty (Bharat Natyam), Someshwar Singh Roy (Classical Music / Vocalist), Ranadip Kr Dey (Painting) and the Sri Sunil Kosar Award for Excellence awarded for being a Bisharad went to Devkanya Dey (Recitation) and Gauri Chatterjee (Nazrul Geetti). Other successful candidates also received various certificates and awards.

At the curtain-raiser, in the second half of this event – a cultural evening, headlined by the illustrious artists –  tabla maestro, Pt. Govind Bose and vocalist Pt. Dinanath Mishra, both were bestowed with the ML Kosar award before their recital.

In a humbling gesture, Pt. Bose who touched us all when he donated his honorarium of 51000 INR to be utilised for the welfare of music, started off the proceedings with a solo performance comprising a traditional lahara in teen Taal, Peshkar, Chakradhar, Kaida, Rela and Tukra, opting for Azrana, Punjab, Farooqabad, Benares, Lucknow, and Lucknow gharanas. Pt. Dinanath Mishra rendered his mellifluous vocal prowess to Rag Bageshree – vilambit ektaal, drut tarana & drut teen taal, following it with Parameswari Bhajan, both to the sensitivity tabla accompaniments of Pt. Debashis Adhikary.
