Why Rohit Sharma deserves to India T20I captain

Being captain of India’s T20I is not only a privilege and an honour but also a reward for being a winner and leader on and off the pitch. While the current captain Virat Kohli can make his case, he has not been successful at his current role as a leader at Royal Challengers Bangalore, with Rohit Sharma eyeing to take over as captain. This is why he deserves a shot to captain the current T20I team.

Success

With 5 IPL trophies to his name, Rohit Sharma is by far the most successful captain in the history of the tournament. He is technically gifted and a great reader of the game. He is the sort of player to rally his troops when things go wrong, and he does not baulk when under pressure. The Mumbai Indians captain is often hailed as the bedrock of his team’s success. As a successful captain, it is thus obvious that he should also be captain of his country’s T20I team. Comparisons with Virat Kholi

The argument is that Virat Kohli does not have the same exceptional record as Sharma. Sharma has 5 titles, and Mumbai Indians have a 60% winning record under his captaincy. Virat Kholi has never won the IPL, and his team have won 47% of their matches under him. When it comes to ODIs, Kholi has won 72%, while in T20I’s, his winning rate is 65%. MS Dhoni, the previous Indian captain, had a combined 60% average in both ODIs and T20Is. While there seems to be not such a big difference, some may wonder why there have to be reasons for calls for change.

Why change is needed

It has been argued that Kholi’s numbers are good because India is a strong team. In the 2 ICC events in which he has captained India, they reached the final once and the other time in the semi-final. The reason why change may be needed is that India are such a team of a strong calibre, and thus need to be led by someone with a taste of success. If his win rate of 47% is anything to go by, then Sharma should be the one to call up to. The reason is that his success at Mumbai Indians, the best IPL team, means that he would lead this incredible group of players to achieve more success. However, it should not escape the fact that Kholi got the captaincy after Dhoni moved on. Since there was no uproar when this happened, it means that Sharma was not really in contention for the captaincy back then. If Kholi has a successful T20I campaign and in subsequent ICC tournaments, it is possible that Sharma may not get a shot at leading his country in the highest levels. It would be unfortunate if this were to happen, but it is only fair to look at his merits this time and decide if he really deserves this chance to lead his country.
