Indian Medical Association Acclaims the CSIR-CMERI Oxygen Enrichment
A Webinar on the CSIR-CMERI developed ‘Oxygen Enrichment Technology’ was organised in association with the Indian Medical Association, Tamil Nadu, on 29th May 2021 for the Doctors and Associate Medical Fraternity. Prof. Harish Hirani, Director, CSIR-CMERI, was the Key Speaker and deliberated upon the Optimized Usage of Oxygen, CSIR-CMERI Oxygen Technology, and the Roadmap for the future. The Virtual Congregation was also graced by Dr. A.K. Ravikumar, Secretary of Indian Medical Association, Tamil Nadu, and Dr. P. Ramakrishnan, President of Indian Medical Association, Tamil Nadu. The Webinar was attended by more than 75 members, a majority of whom were members of the Indian Medical Association which included Doctors, Associate Medical Professionals, and representatives of MSMEs & PSUs .
Prof. Harish Hirani, Director, CSIR-CMERI, shared that CSIR-CMERI has a Vision for an Oxygen Sufficient India along with a Sustainable Solution. He further explained that Various Insightful Scientific Reports establishes that during a Single Complete Respiration Cycle the process of Inhalation uses the only 1/3rd of the total time. However, as per current practices, Oxygen is supplied to patients indiscriminately. These practices render almost 30% to 40% of the supplied oxygen as wastage. This is prevalent as practice because most of the Oxygen related Technologies available in the markets are based upon providing Oxygen Therapy for the patients and are not tailor-made to tackle patients with transmissible diseases.
As per renowned Scientific & Medical journals, Nasal Cannulas when used for Oxygen Therapy has the risk of transmitting enormous amounts of Viral Load to attending Healthcare Personnel present nearby. Thus, it has been suggested that at least N95 masks should worn over the Nasal Cannula to help arrest the Viral Load transmission. Advanced versions of NIV Hoods and NIV Masks might also provide a solution towards this end. Thus, there is a need to explore avenues for Generating and Moderating Oxygen in a Decentralised Manner. This will help in tremendously cutting down Complex Oxygen Transportation Logistics related issues as well as help opening up Oxygen facilities in Small Clinics, Mohalla Clinics, Small Private Hospitals thereby substantially reducing dependence upon Large Medical Establishments.
CSIR-CMERI thus zeroed-in upon an Alternative Methodology and thus developed the Oxygen Enrichment Technology and with slight modifications it can cater to the Oxygen demands of a 10 bedded Medical Center. An Advanced Version of the Oxygen Enrichment Technology is also being worked upon whereby both the Flow Rate and the Oxygen Enrichment levels may be controlled. It will be functioning based upon the existing Infrastructure of the Hospitals. The Technology will be able to provide a supply of upto 60 LPM with a differential combination of Oxygen Enrichment and Cylinder-based Oxygen Supply. It will feature an integrated SPO2 sensor and will function along with C-PAP, I-PAP, E-PAP and Bi-PAP and thereby help in the establishment of Mini-ICUs.
Dr. A.K. Ravikumar, Secretary, Indian Medical Association, Tamil Nadu, delivered the Welcome Address for the Webinar and later shared that so many lives have been lost for want of Oxygen. He stressed upon the need to prepare for the future and thus suggested that CSIR-CMERI Oxygen Technology can pave the way for a secure Oxygen Supply. CSIR-CMERI has come out with a very well-researched Technology and can help save many patients in the future.
Dr. P. Ramakrishnan, President, Indian Medical Association, Tamil Nadu, shared that it is time for Technology to come in and reduce the Wastage of Oxygen. The CSIR-CMERI Oxygen Technology is an excellent initiative in this direction and we are steadily looking forward towards this technology for future Medical Needs.
Shri S.S. Babuji, Director, MSME-DI, Chennai, appreciated the CSIR-CMERI Oxygen Technology very much and assured that MSME-DI office will provide all assistance to the MSMEs for adopting and rolling out the technology for the markets.
Shri Kailash Kanth, Head-CSR, IOCL, expressed his interest of signing a MoU with CSIR-CMERI for expanding the outreach of the technology to the Rural Medical Infrastructure of the Nation, utilizing CSR funds.
Dr. V. Vardharajan, former President, IMA, Tamil Nadu, enthusiastically appreciated the technology and shared that the portability of CSIR-CMERI Oxygen Technology will make possible its usage even in Mobility such as when a person is travelling in a Car, Bus or Train. This will facilitate the accessibility of Oxygen to all the citizens in a Democratic manner.
Numerous Doctors from the Tamil Nadu Medical Fraternity congratulated Prof. Harish Hirani and his team for such a pertinent Technology, which is the need of the hour, and thanked him on behalf of the Doctor Community.
