CSIR-CMERI dedicates one-of-its kind Water Testing Facility for the Nation
The CSIR-CMERI Water Testing Facility was inaugurated by Dr.Subhas Sarkar, Hon’ble Union Minister of State for Education, Government of India in the kind presence of Prof. Harish Hirani, Director, CSIR-CMERI and Shri Lakshman Chandra Ghorui, Hon’ble MLA, Durgapur-Paschim on 28th August 2021.
The inaugurated CSIR-CMERI Water Testing Facility is essentially a Potable Water and Waste Water Testing facility to ensure that the Water Quality adheres to IS 10500:2012 standards. The evaluation and analysis of the Water Parameters using sophisticated instruments such as Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS with graphite furnace & hydride generator, Microwave digester, UV-VIS Spectrophotometer, Flame Photometer, Ion selective electrodes etc.) for assessment of pH, Turbidity, Conductivity, TDS, Hardness, Alkalinity, Chloride, Fluoride, Nitrate, Phosphate among many others.
CSIR-CMERI will be providing water testing services to various Government sectors/Municipality, academic institutions, industries, housing societies/complexes, individuals etc. Henceforth, CSIR-CMERI will also organise numerous skill training program to the college and university students to create awareness among them & provide hands-on training with sophisticated instruments on various aspects towards the quality of Drinking Water and Wastewater.
The inauguration of the Water Testing Facility was followed by demonstration of the CSIR-CMERI developed Mechanized Scavenging Machine, High-Flow Rate Arsenic and Iron Removal, High-Flow Rate Fluoride and Iron Removal Plant and exhibition of the numerous CSIR-CMERI developed Technologies such as the Oxygen Enrichment Technology, integrated Municipal Solid Waste Management Technology, Anti-COVID Technologies, Improvised Hybrid Cooking System (Bio-Mass), Robotics among many others. Dr.Subhas Sarkar also addressed the Scientists, Students and Officials of CSIR-CMERI.
Dr.Subhas Sarkar, Hon’ble Union Minister of State for Education, Government of India, during his address elaborated how India showed a resilient character during the onset of the pandemic and how the challenge was adequately tackled through Statesmanship and able Leadership of the Hon’ble Prime Minster through a comprehensive and holistic Policy Portfolio. He expressed his happiness and elation at how a public-funded R&D Organisation such as CSIR-CMERI has showcased such resilience in-tune with the approach and resilience of the Government of India. CSIR-CMERI has developed numerous Cost-Effective and Socio-Centric Innovations. The Local Bodies, Panchayats, MSMEs, Industries and Media should make all out efforts to popularize these Technologies so that they may be deployed at the earliest for serving the Society and the Nation at large. Since, most of the diseases and flooding problems causes huge loss of property and lives every year in India, the deployment of CSIR-CMERI technologies across the Nation will help fight against these hazards. The Mechanized Scavenging Machine is path-breaking technology and will immensely help in the eradication of Manual Scavenging from the Nation. CSIR-CMERI has been a flag-bearer of Science since the development of the Swaraj and the Sonalika Tractors, which has helped usher the Green Revolution in India and now the World’s Largest Solar Tree in combination with E-Tractors can usher in a Revolution in Fossil Fuel Free Agricultural Practice. The Farm Mechanization and Post-Harvest Technologies of CSIR-CMERI has been positively influencing the lives of thousands of people in the North-Eastern States of India and save thousands of tonnes of valuable food crops from being wasted. The CSIR-CMERI Water Purification technologies are a perfect specimen of how CSIR-CMERI is supplementing the Jal Jeevan Mission and HarGhar Jal flagship schemes of the Government of India and provide Accessible and Safe Drinking Water for millions. The integrated Municipal Solid Waste Management Technology which has processed almost 200 Tonnes of Solid Waste since its inception will further bolster the Swachcha Bharat Mission of the Government of India. The innovative conversion of Wastes into Upcycled Products such as Bio-Mass Briquttes and Bio-Gas can help India substantially reduce its Import Bill and overturn dependence upon Fossil Fuels. CSIR-CMERI in the recent years has been at the fore-front of Socio-Economic Impact of Science and Technology and thus can help shape a better future for India by ensuring that the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s Vision of execution of Technologies from ‘Lab-to-Land’ can be realised. Dr. Sarkar congratulated Prof. Harish Hirani and the Team under his Leadership for showcasing Resilience and Self-Less Service through Science & Technology even during the distressed periods of 1st and 2nd COVID waves. The Jigyasa Programs and Webinars for the MSMEs have been able to enlighten the minds of thousands of students and entrepreneurs across the country by empowering and equipping them with the latest Science & Technology Know-How. Dr. Sarkar wished Prof. Harish Hirani and Team CSIR-CMERI luck and urged Prof.Hirani to continue the momentum of deploying Science and Technology for National and Societal Progress.

The Youth are the key driving factors for the Nation’s Future and thus enhancing their Skillsets would provide a strong Human Resource force for India, which will ultimately make them competent at par with Advanced Economies.
CSIR-CMERI stands for strengthening the foundations of the Nation by reinforcing the Society and Economy through development of Sustainable and Cost-Effective Technologies. The CSIR-CMERI Water Testing Facility is the only Government Water Testing Facility in the region and is a robust and holistic Infrastructure which would aid the Industry, Academic Institutions, Local Bodies and Public Works entities of the region. The CSIR-CMERI Water Purification Technologies have already benefitted lakhs of people across the country and this newly inaugurated Water Testing Facility would provide an opportunity for the Scientists to assess and evaluate the performance and efficiency of the developed Technologies.
