Gentleman and true sportsman of Kolkata Maidan Surajit Sengupta lost the final match with COVID breadth last at Kolkata Hospital
Whenever anyone asked entire Maidan how you feel about Surajit Sengupta, one expression “Gentleman and Sportsman” be it his peers or the political leaders or fans, Surajit Da will be ever in their heart as “Gentleman and Sportsman”.

Expressing grief, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, “I am deeply saddened by the demise of Nakshatra footballer Surjit Sengupta. Surjit Sengupta, one of the best wingers in the country, has played for two major clubs, East Bengal and Mohun Bagan. He was the captain of East Bengal in 1986-89. His death caused irreparable damage to the sports world. Personally, I knew him as a gentleman. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family and fans of Surjit Sengupta. “
Shri Surjit Sengupta was born on August 30, 1951. After starting his football career at Khidirpur Club, he played in three big clubs in Kolkata. Truly another star falls in Bengal football. Surjit Sengupta, a star footballer of the same generation, passed away a few days after the death of Subhash Bhowmik another legend. He was 61 years old. Surjit passed away at 1:54 pm on Thursday.
He had been admitted to a private hospital near EM Bypass since January 24 (last Monday) due to Kovid. The body had low oxygen levels. There was shortness of breath, with a severe cough. Although his condition was critical until Friday evening, he was relatively stable. But at night, a sudden decline began. Shortness of breath increases. The conversation becomes incoherent. Oxygen levels continue to decrease. Blood pressure had to be controlled artificially. In this situation, it was decided to keep him on ventilation. Earlier, he had been in ICU with Bypap Support since Monday night.
