Statistics Day 2022 at Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata

Kolkata:
In recognition of the notable contributions made by Late Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis in the fields of statistics, statistical system and economic planning, the Government of India in 2007, has designated 29th June as the “Statistics Day” in the category of Special Days to be celebrated every year at the National level.

The objective of the celebration of this Day is to create public awareness about the importance of statistics in socio-economic planning and policy formulation to acknowledge the contribution of Prof. Mahalanobis and to pay homage to him.

Prof. Mahalanobis had set up the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) at Kolkata in 1931. The Institute was declared as an “Institute of National Importance” under the aegis of Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation, through an act of Parliament in 1959.

ISI also celebrates 29th June as the “Workers Day”.
The celebrations of the programme started with garlanding the bust of Prof. Mahalanobis by the faculty members, employees, students and guests and paying their obeisance to the Father of Statistics at Amrapali Lawn.

Prof. Somnath Dasgupta, Senior Scientist, Indian National Science Academy (INSA) has grace the occasion as the Chief Guest at Platinum Jubilee Auditorium of the Institute. He depicted the contribution of Prof. Mahalanobis as a statistician of independent India. On this occasion he delivered a presentation on the topic “The Earth is restless with cycles of creation and destruction: The story from India”.

Prof. Partha Pratim Majumder, former Faculty member in the Human Genetics Unit of the Institute paid his homages to Prof. Mahalanobis.
Shri Bibek Debroy, Chairman of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister & President, Indian Statistical Institute has grace the occasion and delivered his valuable speech.

Prof. Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay, Director of the Institute in her welcome address to the audience spoke about Prof. Mahalanobis’s contribution regarding the uses of statistics in social welfare and other areas. She also expressed that the collective data of ISI is ready for uses in technologies of developing India.

Prof. Arijit Bishnu, Convener of the Reception Committee of the programme delivered his inaugural speech and appraised the audience regarding the importance of the Day.
Prof. Guruprasad Kar, President, Indian Statistical Institute Workers’ Organisation expressed his gratitude to Prof. Mahalanobis and the role of the organisation.
The programme concluded with vote of thanks by Lt. Col. Sandeep Pal, Officiating Chief Executive (Admn. & Finance) of the Institute.

In this occasion, a pictorial representation on Prof. Mahalanobis was also organised throughout the Institute to memorise the glimpses on him.
