61st Subroto Cup Manipur, Tripura schools record highest victory margins

Three hat-tricks on the day

New Delhi, Wednesday, September 07, 2022: The Heirok Higher Secondary School (HHSS), Imphal and the Sudhanwa Debbarma Memorial High School (SDMHS), Jampuijala, recorded identical 7-0 victory margins on day two of the 61st Subroto Cup International Football tournament, as the Boys Under-14 group stage matches began in right earnest, with 11 games being played across four grounds of the national capital.

HHS, Imphal, overwhelmed Ramakrishna Mission Vivekanand Vidya Peeth, Narayanpur, Chhattisgarh, at the Tejas Football Ground, with the help of the tournament’s second-hattrick by L. Bikramjit who scored in the 15th, 46th and 49th minute of the match. Teammate L. Boyomayo got a brace, scoring in the 7th and 13th minute. The other goals were scored by K. Dingkal (29th) and  J. Likson (33rd).

SDMHS, Jampuijala, got their 7-0 result against The Air Force Schools (TAFS) at the Ambedkar Stadium. Jetli Kalai got the third tournament hat-trick in this game scoring in the 15th, 19th and 39th minutes. Bijoy, Rohit, Asutosh and Philman got the other goals for the Tripura side.

Also winning on the day were Government Chawngfianga Middle School, Mizoram, who beat Army Public School, Delhi Cantonment, 5-0. This game at Ambedkar witnessed the first tournament hat-trick with Isak Lalmaisawma scoring in the 5th, 25th and 47th minutes of the game.

Other winners of the day included the Major Dhyan Chand Sports College, Lucknow (2-1 over KVS, Imphal), Gurukul, Kurukshetra who beat B.K.Birla Centre of Education 3-0 and Pathways School, Noida, who were 3-0 winners over St. Francis Xavier School, Daman and Diu.

ABOUT SUBROTO CUP

Subroto Cup Football Tournament is a prestigious international inter-school football tournament that is held annually in New Delhi, India. Named after the Indian Air Force Air Marshal Subroto Mukerjee, it is an annual event that began in 1960. Students from different countries across Asia participate in this tournament, making it one of the more noteworthy school-level football competitions.

Subroto Mukerjee conceived the idea in 1958 when he was the Chief of the Air Staff. Subroto Mukerjee Sports Education Society was formed in 1960 after his untimely death in Tokyo. The first tournament was held in 1960, with participation of about 50 school teams. Since 1998, the tournament has been played in two age groups, sub-Junior (under 14 years) and Junior (under 17 years). Madhyamgram High School, West Bengal has the record for winning this tournament (U17) the most number of times (7) which includes a hat trick of titles from     1981 – 1983.
