Senior Journalist Shri G. S. Varadachari, passed away today!
Hyderabad, November 3rd, 2022: Senior Journalist Shri G. S. Varadachari, passed away today at 12:45 pm, while reaching to hospital. He was ailing with age related illness for the last few days and passed away peacefully. His final rites will be performed at Panjagutta Smashana Vatika, tomorrow Friday 4th November at 10.00 am.
He was born in Armoor in Nizamabad on 15th October 1932. He did his Bachelor of Arts from Osmania University in 1954; Post-graduate Diploma in Journalism from Osmania University in 1956 and did LL.B. from Osmania University in 1959. He started his journalism career with Andhra Janata in 1948. He was a senior Telugu language film critic and journalist. He was Assistant Editor of Andhra Bhoomi till his retirement in 1988. He is survived by two sons Sri Harsha and Srivatsa and two daughters Subha and Soumya. He lived with his two sons in his own residence at Journalist Colony, Road No 3, Banjara Hills. His daughters are staying abroad in the USA and all are well settled.
His journalism career included stints as Assistant Editor, Eenadu, from 21st November 1983 to 26th December 1988; News Editor, Andhra Bhoomi, from 4th March 1961 to 20th November 1982; Assistant Editor, Andhra Janatha, from 26th June 1956 to 3rd March 1961. Visiting Professor in Journalism, Potti Sriramulu Telugu University from 23rd December 1988 to 30 June 2010. Professor, Indian School of Journalism of hmtv, from 16th August 2010 and News Ombudsman for hmtv, 24-hour news channel, 31 Dec, 2013.
He was the President of Telugu Bhashodyama Samakhya, which fights for Telugu language usage in government, till his death. He received an honorary doctorate from Telugu University for journalism.
He received several awards including, Patrakar Siromani title conferred by Sarva Bhasha Patrakar Sammelan held at Kolkata on 26th November 1976 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Udant Marthand, the first Hindi journal; Prathibha Puraskarm in Journalism by P.S. Telugu University, in 1999; Dasari Gold Medal as best film journalist in 1986; Patrika Rachanacharya title conferred by Kinnera at sashtipurthy function on 24th October – 1992; Visishta Puraskaram for journalism presented by Govt. of Andhra Pradesh on the occasion of Vyaya Ugadi, 2006; Doctor of Letters (D. Litt, Honoris causa ) conferred by P. S. Telugu University on 26th February 2007; Narla Lifetime Achievement Award as best journalist by Govt of A.P. for the year 2005; Vishala Bharati Gourava Puraskar for literature given by Delhi Telugu Academy 201; Mukkamala Nagabhushanam Journalist Award of Krishna Jilla Writers’ Association 2011; Dr,TirumalaRamachandraPuraskaram, by Kinnera Arts, Hyd. 2013; B.S.R.Kroshna Memorial Award of World Telugu Federation. Chennai, 2014 and Sri Ramanavami Puraskaram of Sanathana Dharma Sabha Charitable Trust, 8th April 2014;

Awards Committee 2002; Member, of Press Academy of A.P.-1999-2001; Member Film Review Committee of Door Darshan, Hyderabad-2004-2006; Member, Board of Governors, Rachana College of journalism; Conducted six workshops of weeklong duration for rural reporters working in all districts of A.P. as part of extension service of P.S. Telugu University; President, A.P. Union of Working Journalists’-1980-81; Secretary APUWJ- 1962-64; General Secretary APUWJ-1964-66; Founder Secretary of Press Club of Hyderabad-1963-64; President, Journalists’ Coop. Housing Society- 1975-78; President, Journalists’ Colony Welfare Association- 1986-90, 2001; President, Hyderabad Film Critics Association-1962-83 & 1985-88; President, A.P. Cinegoers’ Association from 1977; President, Telugu Bhasha Chaitanya Samithi and President, Veteran Journalists’ Association 2006 to August 2022.
