West Bengal Team bags the championship title of “Khelo India Khelo “The First Inter state cycling championship in Kolkata
• SPORTS AUTHORITY OF INDIA, West Bengal Cyclists Association, and Kolkata Society For Cultural Heritage organised this inter state level cycling championship in New Town Kolkata
• 85 cyclists from seven states participated in the all Women’s cycling championship
• The tournament was held on 25th & 26th March at Eco Park
• Mehtab Hossain, a former footballer and fitness enthusiast gave over prizes to the winners.
Kolkata , 26th March ,2023 : Sports Authority of India under the aegis of ministry of sports and youth affairs,Govt of India organized an all Women Cycling Championship under khelo India Khelo initiative involving 7 states with West Bengal Cyclists Association & Kolkata Society for Cultural Heritage on March 25th and 26th at Eco Park, Newtown under the aegis of the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs , Govt of India. Seven States like West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Manipur will participate in the competition. Over one hundred women cyclists attended in the road cycling events.
At a formal function Mr. Mehtab Hossain, former footballer presented prizes In presence of Shri Milan Kanti Mandal, DFO, South 24 Parganas , Sourav Mukherjee, Chairman, West Bengal Cyclists Association (WBCA) and Arpita Mukherjee, President, Kolkata Society For Cultural Association.
Tanu Bharti from UP bagged Gold Medal in 15km time trial. Sital Chetri from West Bengal bagged Gold Medal in Elite category (20km trial). Tara Minz Jharkhand, got Gold Medal in sub junior girls time trial.
West Bengal Cyclists Association (WBCA) and Kolkata Society of Cultural Heritage (KSCH) have earlier signed an MOU at Calcutta Sports Journalist Tent to hold Khelo India Women’s Cycling Championship Road Cycling under the aegis of Sports Authority of India (SAI) & the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs , Govt of India. . WBCA along with KSCH got the mandate to arrange arrange the championship and all necessary enablers like food and accommodation for all the participants including officials from the respective states starting from 24th afternoon to 27th morning hours.
“After a successful completion of Khelo India Women championship, we are going to promote the sport at district level. Now our goal is to find talents for National level from West Bengal. We have plans to sponsor those talents and provide proper skills for the rising cyclists.” said Chairman WBCA Sourav Mukherjee.
“It has been years since an event of national stature could be brought to Kolkata . Kolkata Society for Cultural Heritage organised this event to use sports for all round development of boys and girls and provide opportunities to develop career in sports and mobilise social entrepreneurship. The aim is to promote green transport in West Bengal” said president of KSCH, Mrs. Arpita Mukherjee.
