ATK Mohun Bagan beat NorthEast United FC 2-1 in Imphal
Imphal, 27 April, 2023: Two matches of the National Group Stage of the Reliance Foundation Development League (RFDL) 2022-23 were held at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Complex in Imphal on April 27th, 2023.
The day kicked off with a high-profile clash between the youth teams of two Indian Super League (ISL) clubs, namely: ATK Mohun Bagan (ATKMB) and NorthEast United FC.
The Mariners emerged victorious 2-1 eventually in a closely fought encounter. They secured a lead early on in the first-half in the third minute itself through a powerful strike from midfielder Loitongbam Taison Singh. ATKMB held onto their lead for the following hour before doubling the same through Taison’s second strike in the 63rd minute.
The team maintained solid defensive organisation for the rest of the game and the Highlanders had to rely on an injury-time goal from their star man Parthib Gogoi to salvage some pride out of the contest. Gogoi did not start the game and only came off the bench to put the ball past the ATKMB goalkeeper Syed Zahid Hossain.
The second game resulted in a 1-1 draw between Classic Football Academy (Classic FA) and SAI-RC. SAI-RC will rue not taking away three points from this game as skipper Kharibam Pravananda Meitei had put them ahead in the game with a 20th minute goal itself. However, Classic FA struck back courtesy forward Chinkhoisam Dimngel netting a goal in the 86th minute.
The late goal helps Classic FA sit solidly at the top spot in the group rankings with four points to their name whereas ATK Mohun Bagan and NorthEast United FC follow them closely at the second and the third spots respectively. SAI-RC are at the penultimate position in the rankings as they still seek their first victory of the campaign.
