British Deputy High Commission celebrated Coronation with a carbon neutral reception

The British Deputy High Commission Kolkata marked the Coronation of Their Majesties The King Charles III and The Queen in Kolkata on Saturday 6 May 2023 with a celebratory evening reception. The reception event was being supported by a number of partner organizations including Luxmi Group, Diageo, CDE Asia, Shrachi Group, Anmol Feeds, Rad 365, JIS Foundation, Nicco Parks, IIHM, IBSA, Grover Zampa, Bira and London Essence.

King Charles is a great supporter of nature and environment conservation and strongly believes in climate action.

One of the key themes for the celebration reception in Kolkata was sustainability. The event was carbon neutral and financed verified carbon removal and avoidance projects in Eastern India that are producing carbon credits. A QR code was generated and guests voted for their preferred carbon reducing project. These projects are helping to offset the emissions from the event, which even included travel-related emissions of guests. British Deputy High Commission Kolkata also tied up with a waste recycling partner to promote creatively designed waste products put together by women of 24 Self Help Groups from West Bengal. We also partnered with electric bike and electric taxi companies to promote clean mobility. The staff of the British Deputy High Commission used Snap-E Cabs to commute to the venue of the reception.

Mr. Peter Cook, Acting British Deputy High Commissioner to Kolkata said: “I am delighted and privileged to have marked this historic occasion by hosting a reception in Kolkata on 6 May. In line with The Big Help Out, I would volunteer and interact with children from a NGO, CRY in Kolkata on 8 May. One of the highlights of the reception was an exclusive platter of British food which included the Coronation Quiche, Coronation Chicken, Welsh lamb Cawl, Fish and Chips, Apple Cinnamon Pie et al. I was delighted to cut a specially designed Coronation Cake for the guests.”

The reception was attended by a wide range of dignitaries from the Government of West Bengal, representatives from business leaders, climate figures, UK alumni, differently-abled sportspersons,s and other personalities from academics, cinema, and tourism.

His Majesty and his travel to India

·       The King has undertaken 10 official visits to India; the first in 1980 to Kolkata and most recently in November 2019 when he visited New Delhi and Mumbai.

·       In addition to his official and ceremonial duties in the UK and overseas, His Majesty has championed a wide range of causes relating to the environment and sustainable development, the arts, healthcare and education for decades. He has established more than 20 charities over four decades; he founded the British Asian Trust founded by His Majesty in 2007.

·       To add a multi-faith touch to the traditionally Christian religious ceremony, leaders from other faiths were also invited to participate for the first time. Lord Narendra Babubhai Patel, 84, represented the Hindu faith and carried the sovereign’s ring. Lord Indrajit Singh, 90, represented the Sikh faith and carried the coronation glove. Lord Kamall, 56, a London-born Muslim peer, carried the arm ills or a pair of bracelets.
