AKAM Kolkata: Metal Recycling plays an important role in CE and the reduction of carbon emission

Kolkata, 15 June, 2023:

India has traversed a way over the last 75 years and aspires to reach even greater milestones. It is also a tribute to the millennial India that understands its priorities for the next 25 years and is gearing up to face and overcome its challenges. In this context, India is celebrating Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav which is the government’s initiative to celebrate and commemorate 75 years of independence. India is a mega-diverse country, and it is our duty to protect this economy.

Ministry of Mines and Ministry of Steel, Government of India is organizing an “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM) – CIRCULAR ECONOMY Campaign – 2023”. Under this banner, Jawaharlal Nehru Aluminium Research Development & Design Centre (JNARDDC), Material Recycling Association of India (MRAI) have jointly organized an Awareness Conference on “Sustainable & Circular Bharat: Towards Zero Waste in Metals Processing” today in Kolkata.

Mr. U C Joshi, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Mines; Mr. Subhash Kumar, Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Steel; Dr. Anupam Agnihotri, Director, JNARDDC, Mr. Rajesh Pandey, IAS, Principal Secretary, Department of MSME & Textile, Government of West Bengal; Dr. Rajesh Kumar, Member Secretary, West Bengal Pollution Control Board, and other dignitaries graced the occasion.
In his inaugural speech, Director, JNARDDC Dr. Agnihotri said that “Begin with renewable energy, replace the processes with responsible alternatives such as e-lead breaking, recycle the products, trace each step to ensure transparent and abundant opportunities for all. This shall lead to a circular responsible economy and eco-system whilst maintaining growth”.

As a part of this program, there was an exclusive two-day plant visit for officials from the Ministry of Steel, the Ministry of Mines. Academicians and students from Technology and Government Engineering Colleges have visited the Manaksia Aluminium Company Ltd, Steel Crackers Pvt. Ltd, Eastern Copper Manufacturing Co. Pvt. Ltd, Leadstone Energy Ltd, Brand Alloys Pvt. Ltd, Gadia Aluminium Pvt. Ltd plans.

The objective of this conference at Kolkata is to understand the challenges and issues of the industry, showcasing the best practices of scrap processing in Kolkata and surrounding areas. It also aims to increase awareness about waste utilization and the scrap recycling industry to create more awareness and adapt sustainability-driven changes to their production and entire supply chain which involves all the stakeholders with a commitment to maximizing the contribution of the metal industry to a sustainable society.

This campaign emphasizes more to adopt innovative technologies to achieve zero carbon emissions which enable us to achieve the sustainable development goal and converge PM’s mission LiFE which is a movement for “mindful and deliberate utilization, instead of mindless and destructive consumption” to protect and preserve the environment.
