Elite Women’s Pro Basketball League ends its national TryOuts in Kolkata

The Elite Women’s Pro Basketball League successfully completed the national tryouts for the league with the Kolkata leg of the tryouts. This completes the league’s nationwide hunt to find the next big talent in the sport of basketball in India. The Kolkata tryouts held between the 22nd and 24th of June 2023 at the Space Circle, Kolkata was a great success with over 300 participants and 20 players finally making the cut as they look forward to being in the player pool and hopefully getting a chance to compete in the league tentatively planned for September this year.

I want to congratulate all the players drafted into the league as well as all players who came forward and participated in the tryouts which have been the most important pillar of this league. They are the true pioneers and visionaries of this endeavour. I wish to see the same level of support and enthusiasm for the upcoming season as well.” Said Mr. Sunny Bhandarkar, CEO, of Elite Women’s Pro Basketball League at the end of the Kolkata tryouts.
All the players were put under a microscope as the selection committee judged players on the basis of skills, drills, and also how the athlete adapts to playing with different teams and strategies and each day was witness to a couple of players making the cut. Out of the 20 players that were shortlisted through the span of three days, 7 players were signed on day 1, 8 players on day 2, and finally 5 players on day 3. The other 22 players that have been shortlisted still have a chance to get into the league but that will be decided later post the Kolkata tryouts based on the player rankings.
A total of 60 players have been drafted at the end of these national tryouts held in Noida, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Kolkata over a span of a couple of months. The next steps are to draft players into teams and start prepping for the season. There is also a parallel plan for the expansion of the league by adding two more teams owing to the overwhelming response from top-notch talents in the Indian Basketball ecosystem.
