EASTERN RAILWAY HARVESTING RAIN WATER FOR ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

Kolkata, July 20, 2023 :

Under the leadership of General Manager, Shri Amar Prakash Dwivedi, Eastern Railway is planning every development effort over its jurisdiction, keeping in view the need for compensating conservation of the environment for a sustainable growth path and achieving a green Railway network. Rain water harvesting is one such measure taken by Eastern Railway over all its Divisions and Workshops to stop the depletion of ground water and use natural and renewable water sources in daily life.

Marching ahead in this direction, Eastern Railway has already created rain water harvesting points at 240 locations over its network. Among these, 19 rain water harvesting reservoirs are in Howrah Division, 92 in Sealdah Division, 73 in Asansol Division, 38 in Malda Division, 2 in Liluah Workshop, 11 in Kanchrapara Workshop, and 5 in Jamalpur Workshop. Eastern Railway is maintaining all such rain water harvesting points in good health so that those are in usable condition even in the dry season to support the life of different flora & fauna maintaining the bio-diversity.

Besides, Eastern Railway has made arrangements for the recycling of water through affluent treatment plants or sewage treatment plants at different locations and thus reducing the depletion of usable water in nature. There are 14 such plants over the Eastern Railway network having a total water recycling capacity of 16 million liters per day.
