TRAIN MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (TMS) INTRODUCED IN SEALDAH DIVISION FOR REAL-TIME MONITORING OF TRAIN OPERATIONS
Kolkata, August 31, 2023
As a part of Eastern Railway’s continuous endeavour for more efficient train operations with optimum scheduling, Shri Amar Prakash Dwivedi, General Manager, Eastern Railway commissioned a Train Management System (TMS) at Sealdah today (31.8.2023). The Train Management System is an integrated real-time traffic management for monitoring & controlling train movements.
Train Management System (TMS) imports the status of signals, track circuits, points, etc. from the station interlocking system on a real-time basis. TMS also obtains the train/rake identification details from the originating point of the TMS zone/territory. This information is processed and used to monitor the movement of trains and facilitates timely decision-making. TMS can regulate train movement, diversion of trains, induction of trains, withdrawal of trains, and planning reversal of trains in the TMS zone/territory.
This Train Management System (TMS) has been installed in the Sealdah control office and covers the Sealdah – Ranaghat Section. Gradually the system will be extended to other sections.
The benefits of implementation of the Train Management System in the Sealdah division are as follows:
• Increased line capacity by reducing the headway between trains – using real-time availability of train movement information.
• Improvement in punctuality (in maintaining schedule) of the trains – by better planning.
• Optimized decision-making – by efficient management of speed restrictions
• Faster response to emergencies
• It enhances the efficiency and safety of train operation.
• The physical positions of all the trains running in the section are displayed at a glance through Sized Video Display Units (VDUs).
• The track layouts, signal positions, and level crossing gales are also displayed on the VDUs for the entire section.
• TMS imports the status of signals, track circuits, points, etc. from the station interlocking system on a real-time basis.
• TMS also obtains the train/rake identification details from the originating point of the TMS zone/territory. This information is processed and used to monitor the movement of trains and facilitates timely decision-making.
• Field Interface Unit (FIU) is installed on each Station and LC gate. Relay Information is picked up by wiring and this information is set to the TMS control room through an Optical Fibre Cable (OFC).
All these will not only result in effective train movement management but also enable comparison, and analysis of train movement time graphs to plan the traffic efficiently over the Sealdah division.
