Reflecting on a Legacy: SPK Jain Futuristic Academy Commemorates Dr. Maria Montessori’s Birthday

SPK Jain Futuristic Academy is an incubation space for the future. The future of our children, the community, and the world at large. They are an International K–12 school in New Town Kolkata, offering the IGCSE & ICSE curricula to students. JFA is a unit of Shri S. S. Jain Sabha, an organization dedicated to education and service since 1928, celebrated the enduring legacy of Dr. Maria Montessori on her birthday with a special event that brought together visionary educators, preschool innovators, and practitioners in an enlightening gathering.
The event, which took place on August 31st, 2023, at the school premises in New Town, Kolkata, was a tribute to the transformative influence of Dr. Maria Montessori’s philosophy and teaching methods. Montessori learning is an educational approach developed by Maria Montessori that focuses on fostering a child’s natural curiosity, independence, and self-directed learning. It involves creating an environment where children can choose from a variety of hands-on activities and materials to explore at their own pace. The method emphasizes individualized learning, respect for each child’s unique developmental path, and the role of the teacher as a guide rather than a traditional instructor. Montessori education is widely used in preschool and early childhood settings but has also been adapted for older students. The celebration took the form of an insightful panel discussion, offering attendees a unique opportunity to explore the principles and teachings of the Montessori Method and their relevance in today’s educational landscape.
Distinguished guests, including Sudeshna Roy, Chairperson of the WB Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Shabina Nishat Omar, State President, West Bengal Higher Education Council, Angelina Mantosh, President of the Catholic Association of Bengal, and Suman Sood, Principal of BD Memorial, participated in the event. Their presence added depth and perspective to the discussions surrounding the Montessori approach to childhood development and education. The panel discussion, featuring renowned educators and Montessori practitioners, was a platform for exchanging ideas and experiences. The attendees who are part of this event include pre-school owners and principals.
