EASTERN RAILWAY ORGANISED HINDI DRAMA FESTIVAL -2023

Kolkata, September 09, 2023:

“All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players” — These lines of Shakespeare came alive with the Zonal Railway Hindi Natya Utsav – 2023 which was organized by Eastern Railway on 8 September 2023 at Dr. B.C. Roy Auditorium, Sealdah. The competition was presided over by Shri Ashok Maheshwari, Principal Chief Signal and Telecommunication Engineer, and Mukhya Rajbhasha Adhikari of Eastern Railway. Shri Amar Prakash Dwivedi, General Manager / Eastern Railway gave away the prizes to the outstanding performers in the event.

Various workshops and divisions of Eastern Railway participated in this festival of plays that glued the audience to their seats. While Kanchrapara Workshop’s presentation was a social satire ‘Gadha Bazaar’ or the Market of Donkeys which depicts the extreme unemployment of the educated youth in contemporary society, Liluah Workshop presented ‘Shasti’ or Punishment, based on the literary works of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore which showcased the social biases against women. The protagonist’s plight reminded one of Macbeth’s lines:-

“Life’s but a walking shadow; a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage, and then is heard no more: it is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.”

General Manager, Eastern Railway Shri Amar Prakash Dwivedi expressed his happiness in witnessing drama.

Sealdah Division staged ‘Juta’ literally meaning shoes which depicted the plight of the downtrodden and marginalized men and women living in extreme poverty and dejection, while Howrah Division staged the play ‘Nahi’ meaning ‘No’ based on the works of Tarashankar Bandopadhyay, a Bengali writer of much renown,. Asansol Division staged ‘Aadharsh Bharatiya Vivah’ or Ideal Indian Marriage, a lively play, full of songs and dance moves but giving a grave message of the vices of the dowry system which is still prevalent in the present society. The artists all of whom are railway employees, while playing their respective roles, touched the hearts of the audience present in the auditorium. The dialects used were mostly simple and colloquial.

The judges of the Drama Competition were Shri Plavan Vasu and Shri Sushil Kanti who are renowned theatre personalities of many accolades. Certificates and cash awards were handed over by the General Manager of Eastern Railway, Shri Amar Prakash Dwivedi to 11 categories including Best First Play, Best Second Play, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay.
