To augment the cleanliness over Eastern Railway with the active participation of the employees in the special cleanliness drive by Shramadan, Swachhta Pakhwara is being observed all over Indian Railways from 16th to 30th September which is further extended up to 2nd October, to culminate it with Mahatma Gandhi’s Jayanti

Eastern Railway is also observing Swachhta Pakhwada with stress on special day-wise activities as follows:
DAY- 1: 16/09/2023 – Swachhta sapath and Swachh jagrukta (Swachhta pledge and Swachh Awareness).
DAY- 2: 17/09/2023: Swachh Samwad (Cleanliness dialogues/Public)
DAY- 3: 18/09/2023: Swachh Stations (Clean Stations)
DAY- 4: 19/09/2023: Swachh Stations (Clean Stations)
DAY – 5: 20/09/2023: Swachh Railgaadi (Clean Train)
DAY- 6: 21/09/2023: Swachh Railgaadi (Clean Train)
DAY- 7: 22/09/2023: Swachh Patri (Clean Tracks)
DAY- 8: 23/09/2023: Swachh karyalaya, swachh colonies & Parisar (Clean Work Place & Clean Residential Premises)
DAY- 9: 24/09/2023: Swachh Ahar (Clean food)
DAY- 10: 25/09/2023: Swachh Ahar (Clean food)
DAY- 11 : 26/09/2023 : Swachh Neer (Clean Water)
DAY- 12: 27.09.2023: Swachh waterbodies and park (Clean jalashaye & park)
DAY- 13: 28/09/2023: Swachh Prasadhan & paryavaran (Swachh toilets & Environment)
DAY- 14: 29/09/2023: Swachh spardha (Competition)
DAY- 15: 30/09/2023: No to Single Use Plastic
DAY- 16: 01/10/2023: Review/Briefing and Swachh Awareness Rally
DAY- 17: 02/10/2023: Celebration of Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti & Community Day/Sewa Diwas/Community engagement

The Swachhata Pakhwada will encompass a series of activities dedicated to improving cleanliness across railway premises, including stations, trains, tracks, offices, colonies, workshops, maintenance depots, and hospitals. Each day of the campaign is dedicated to specific cleanliness themes, ranging from raising awareness about cleanliness and reducing plastic use to promoting clean food and water to maintain the highest standards of cleanliness and environmental sustainability across the Rail network.

All four divisions viz: Sealdah, Howrah, Asansol & Malda and Workshops like Jamalpur, Kanchrapara, Liluah, and Budge Budge of Eastern Railway celebrated the Day two of Swahhta Pakhwada as Swachh Samwad (Cleanliness dialogues/Public) as notified. The following activities were undertaken under the abled guidance of Shri Amar Prakash Dwivedi, General Manager/ Eastern Railway:

  • Seminars were organized on the Sanitation of railway stations by involving NGOs, Charitable institutions, Scouts and guides, and Unions. All employees were actively involved in undertaking cleanliness drives at their nearest railway stations.
  • Anti-littering notices were displayed in Railway premises like Railway Colonies, Rest Houses and Dormitories, Running Rooms (some of which are Sealdah, Rampurhat, Azimganj, Bardhawan, Katwa) Hospitals and Health Units, and Schools.
  • Use of CCTVs, awareness posters and slogans, skits, Nukkar shows, etc. were also organised which was very much appreciated by passengers. Passengers were sensitized regarding their cooperation in keeping the coach clean through the PA system at the Railway Station
    • Passengers were given pamphlets of the Swachhta pledge.

Eastern Railway has always been at the forefront of promoting a clean and green environment. It has taken several initiatives for providing a clean environment in and around Railway stations and trains such as Bio toilets on coaches leading to clean tracks, segregation of bio-degradable/non-biodegradable waste, solid waste management, discouraging use of single-use plastic, installation of solar panels, etc.
