THE DIABETIC RETINOPATHY SCREENING CAMP WAS SUCCESSFULLY CONDUCTED AT DIVISIONAL RAILWAY HOSPITAL, HOWRAH

Under the guidance of Dr. Debasish Guha, Chief Medical Superintendent/Howrah, Department of Health and Family Welfare, Howrah, in collaboration with Dr. Debjani Mukhopadhyay, Additional Chief Medical Superintendent/Eye/Howrah, organized a Diabetic Retinopathy screening camp at Divisional Railway Hospital, Howrah, under the commendable guidance of Dr. Debasish Guha, Chief Medical Superintendent/Howrah on 19.12.2023.

Dr. Mihir Kumar Choudhury, Principal Chief Medical Director/Eastern Railway, who not only attended the program but also appreciated the dedicated efforts of the organizers. Sri Sanjeev Kumar, Divisional Railway Manager/Howrah, graced the occasion and expressed his wholehearted support for the initiative.

A team of experienced Eye specialists from B. R. Singh Hospital actively participated in the screening program, contributing to its success. Dr. Subhankar Home, Chief Specialist, B. R. Singh Hospital, and Dr. Arnav Mitra, ACHD/Eye/B. R. Singh Hospital was also present to provide valuable consultations.

Ninety-three diabetic patients from the Howrah Division, including areas such as Howrah, Bandel, Burdwan, Katwa, and Rampurhat, underwent screening during the camp. Out of these, 15 were diagnosed with Diabetic Retinopathy, and two patients were found to be suffering from sight-threatening severe diabetic retinopathy.

All screened patients were educated about the significance of regular screening for Diabetic Retinopathy to prevent avoidable blindness. Those identified with the condition received appropriate advice for further management.

The success of this screening camp underscores the commitment of the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Howrah, and the collaborative efforts of medical professionals involved. Such initiatives play a crucial role in early detection and intervention, ultimately contributing to the well-being of the community.
