B R SINGH HOSPITAL: NEONATAL ICU SUCCESS STORY
Kolkata, January 11, 2024
An extremely preterm and low birth weight baby boy (830g), one of the twin babies born at B. R. Singh Hospital, the daughter of a Railway employee, arrived 13 weeks prior to the expected delivery date due to serious maternal and fetal complications.
The baby, facing respiratory distress and early onset sepsis with apnea, was promptly transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Timely intervention included invasive ventilation, antibiotics, optimal oxygen, and other supportive care. Despite challenges such as apnea of prematurity, anemia, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia grade I, which arose due to extreme prematurity, the NICU effectively managed these issues.
Through a gradual recovery process, the baby transitioned from CPAP to high nasal oxygen, received Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC), established breastfeeding, gained weight, and was administered medication. The NICU nurses provided family-based care and intensive support. Regular eye screenings for retinopathy of prematurity and normal brain imaging were part of the comprehensive care plan. After a stable 3-month stay in the NICU, the baby was discharged.
The dedicated efforts of NICU doctors and nurses, along with the collaboration of Obstetricians, Radiologists, Pathologists, and Microbiologists at BRSH, played a crucial role in saving these precious lives. The parents and family expressed extreme happiness and gratitude to B. R. Singh Hospital for the excellent service provided by the doctors and staff.
