EASTERN RAILWAY’S REMARKABLE CONTRIBUTION TO ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY AND ENERGY CONSERVATION

In a commendable display of commitment to environmental sustainability and energy conservation, Eastern Railway has been recognized for its outstanding achievements in harnessing solar energy. The Electrical Department’s impressive generation of 7652 KWp during the Financial Year 2023-24 till December 2023, reflects the Eastern Railway’s dedication to green initiatives.
In the period from April 2023 to December 2023, the utilization of solar panels in Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode yielded an impressive 5950 KWp, while the Non-PPP mode contributed an additional 1702 KWp. Notably, from January to December 2023, a significant 9890.8 KWp was generated, showcasing Eastern Railway’s continuous efforts towards sustainable energy practices. Solar panels operate through the photovoltaic effect, employing semiconductor-based photovoltaic cells, often made of silicon. When exposed to sunlight, these cells release electrons, creating an electric current.
This remarkable feat has earned accolades for the Liluah Workshop, which received the prestigious Energy Conservation Award in December 2023 from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), Ministry of Power, Government of India. Additionally, the Kanchrapara Workshop was honored with the 24th National Award for “Excellence in Energy Management System, 2023” in September 2023 by the Confederation of Indian Industries.
Shri Kausik Mitra Chief Public Relations Officer Eastern Railway stated “These awards underscore Eastern Railway’s leadership in pioneering energy-efficient practices within the rail industry. The acknowledgment by esteemed organizations such as BEE and CII highlights the railway’s exemplary role in driving environmental conservation initiatives.”
