Eastern India’s First Robotic-Assisted Kidney Transplant at Narayana Hospital RN Tagore Hospital
• Saves the Life of a Patient with Chronic Kidney Disease combined with morbid Obesity
Kolkata, March 13, 2024
With a successful Robotic-assisted kidney transplant to save the life of a patient with chronic kidney disease combined with morbid obesity, Narayana Health RN Tagore Hospital once again proved its prominence in organ transplant and created a medical history. The Hospital not only gave renewed hope to the patient weighing over 110 kgs but also achieved a milestone by performing eastern India’s first robotic kidney transplant procedure.
A team led by Dr. Deepak Shankar Ray, Senior Consultant in Nephrology, RN Tagore Hospital, found that traditional open surgery would be full of formidable risks such as wound complication, extended hospital stay, and heightened susceptibility to infections in the said patient given his health challenges. Hence, they opted for a robotic-assisted transplant procedure. With the introduction of robotic surgery, a safer and more efficient alternative became available, offering new possibilities for patients facing challenging medical circumstances.
Robotic kidney transplantation requires a delicate balance of precision and teamwork. The procedure involves intricate maneuvers, including the precise anastomosis of the kidney’s vein and artery to the iliac vein and artery, all executed with unparalleled accuracy utilizing robotic technology. Despite the patient’s weight exceeding 110 kg and a BMI of 36.5, the surgical team skillfully navigated these challenges, ensuring optimal outcomes for the patient.
Dr. Deepak Shankar Ray, Senior Consultant in Nephrology, Narayana Hospital RN Tagore Hospital, Mukundapur, emphasized, “Kidney transplantation remains the gold standard for patients with advanced kidney disease. However, morbid obesity presents unique surgical challenges. Robotic surgery emerges as a preferred choice, offering precise interventions tailored to individual patient needs, and with this case, we made a significant advancement in our ability to provide optimal care for such patients.”

Dr. Tarshid Ali Jahangir, Consultant – GI, Renal Transplant & Robotic Surgeon, Narayana Hospital RN Tagore Hospital, Mukundapur said, “As a team, we strive to redefine what’s possible in healthcare, pushing the boundaries of innovation to ensure every patient receives the highest standards of care. Through the successful execution of robotic kidney transplantation, we’ve not only saved lives but also paved the way for a new era of surgical precision, compassion, and hope.”
The medical milestone achieved at Narayana Hospital RN Tagore Hospital was possible due to a committed team effort. Led by a team of experts including Dr. Deepak Shankar Ray, Dr. Tarshid Ali Jahangir, Dr. Satyadip Mukherjee and Dr. Ravi Ranjan, with invaluable support from technician Noor Hassan, this groundbreaking procedure signifies a significant leap forward in providing innovative solutions for patients with complex medical conditions.
Mr. Abhijit CP, Facility Director of Narayana Hospital RN Tagore Hospital, Mukundapur, commented, ” It is indeed a proud moment for all of us.
