Jio Studios and SVF Entertainment proudly announce their collaborative venture to bring Shakespeare’s timeless masterpiece “Othello” to the silver screen with a contemporary twist, under the title “Athhoi”.
The film’s release date has been officially announced on April 19th, 2024, which was accompanied by a visually stunning video, paying admiration to the Elizabethan Era, and introducing the audience to the talented cast and creative minds behind the project. Sohini Sarkar steps into the role of Diya, embodying the spirited and intelligent character of Desdemona, while Director Arna Mukhopadhyay takes on the challenging portrayal of Dr. Athhoi Lodha, formerly known as Othello. Anirban Bhattacharya will be seen as Gogo, an enigmatic character akin to the cunning Iago from Shakespeare’s original work. He is also the creative director of the film.
Transitioning from the stage to the grandeur of cinema, “Athhoi” stands for devotion and passion. This adaptation of Shakespeare’s narrative of political empathy, which originally graced the stage under ‘Nathada’s’ direction, elicited substantial and widespread acclaim since March 2016. Encouraged by the overwhelming response, the creators resolved to bring this tale to the silver screen.
Scheduled for release on June 14, “Athhoi” is poised to be a landmark cinematic event, eagerly awaited by audiences worldwide. Through this adaptation, viewers will be treated to a profound exploration of human emotions, as the film delves into themes of jealousy, ambition, and love within a modern context.
Anirban Bhattacharya, leading the ensemble cast and the Creative Director of the film, shares, “Our aim with ‘Athhoi’ is to offer audiences a fresh perspective on a classic tale. It’s a thrilling journey of unravelling the complexities of the human psyche, set against a backdrop of intrigue and deception. Since we have been a part of the play and doing the theatre together, the three of us were in complete sync from Day 1.”
Sohini Sarkar adds, “Playing Diya has been an exhilarating experience. She is a character of strength and vulnerability, and I believe audiences will connect with her journey on a deeply emotional level.”
Director Arna Mukhopadhyay expresses his excitement, stating, “Bringing ‘Athhoi’ to life has been a labour of love. It’s a story that resonates across generations, and we’ve endeavoured to infuse it with contemporary relevance while staying true to the essence of Shakespeare’s vision.”
“Athhoi” promises to be a cinematic spectacle that will leave audiences spellbound, offering a thought-provoking exploration of the consequences of unchecked manipulation and the enduring power of love.
