Celebration of the 131st Birth Anniversary of Prof. Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis as Statistics Day and Workers’Day on 29th June, 2024 at
Indian Statistical Institute

In recognition of the notable contributions made by Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis in the fields of statistics, statistical system and economic planning, the Government of India in 2007, has designated 29th June as the “Statistics Day” in the category of Special Days to be celebrated every year at the National level.

The objective of celebration of this Day is to create public awareness about the importance of statistics in socio-economic planning and policy formulation to acknowledge the contribution of Prof. Mahalanobis and to pay homage to him.

Prof. Mahalanobis had set up the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) at Kolkata in 1931. The Institute was declared as an “Institute of National Importance” through an act of Parliament in 1959.

ISI also celebrates 29th June as the “Workers’ Day”.

The theme for Statistics Day 2024, as published by Government of India is “Use of Data for Decision making”.

The celebrations of the programme started with garlanding the bust of Prof. Mahalanobis by the faculty members, employees, students and guests and paying their obeisance to the Father of Statistics at Amrapali Lawn.

Prof. Sujit Basu, Former Vice Chancellor, Visva Bharati University graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. He discussed the pioneer role of Prof. P.C. Mahalanobis in the field of Statistics and its applicability for the welfare and development of our country. The world has recognised the same.

Dr. Pronab Sen, Chairman, ISI Council while expressing his reverence virtually, depicted the stellar role of Prof. Mahalanobis in both advancement of Statistics as an academic discipline and its applicability in a wide range of areas, including formulation of government policies.

Prof. Abhirup Sarkar, a Former Faculty Member of the Economics Research Unit and Special Guest of the Institute paid his homages to Prof. Mahalanobis. He shared with the audience regarding the contribution of Prof. Mahalanobis as a statistician.

Prof. Sankar Kumar Pal President, of the Indian Statistical Institute, graced the occasion and delivered his valuable speech. He also appraised the audience regarding the importance of the Day and the pivotal role of Prof. Mahalanobis in the field of Statistics not only in our country but also abroad.

Prof. Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay, Director of the Institute spoke in her welcome address to the audience about Prof. Mahalanobis’s contribution regarding the uses of statistics in social welfare, science, and other fields of research in the present scenario.

Dr. Paramita Das, Convener, Reception Committee expressed her gratitude to Prof. Mahalanobis.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Shri Ravinder Kumar, Chief Executive (Admn. & Finance) of the Institute.
In this occasion, a photo exhibition titled “Verses and Variables: A unique relationship between Tagore and Mahalanobis” was also organized by the P.C. Mahalanobis Memorial Museum and Archives of Library, Documentation and Information Science Division.
