BSF Apprehends Smuggler with Gold Worth Rs. 37.51 Lakhs Hidden in Slippers at Indo-Bangladesh Border in Murshidabad District
Murshidabad, November 5, 2024
In a vigilant operation, jawans from the Border Outpost Farjipara, part of the 146th Battalion under the BSF South Bengal Frontier, intercepted an Indian smuggler attempting to smuggle four gold biscuits from Bangladesh to India along the Indo-Bangladesh border in Murshidabad, West Bengal. The seized gold, weighing 466.50 grams, is estimated to be worth Rs. 37.51 lakhs.
On November 4, 2024, acting on information received from reliable sources, the Company Commander instructed the jawans to be on the lookout for a suspect from Muslimpara village in the area of BOP Farjipara, who was expected to attempt smuggling during the morning shift. At approximately 11:10 AM, the suspect approached the BSF search point on a motorcycle. Upon identification, jawans detained the suspect and conducted a thorough search. Four gold biscuits were found concealed in the suspect’s slippers. The individual, along with the seized gold, was taken to Border Outpost Charbhadra Base for further action.
During interrogation, the suspect admitted to recent involvement in gold smuggling and revealed that he had received the gold from two unknown Bangladeshi smugglers. He was instructed to cross the BSF Domination Line and deliver the gold consignment to an unidentified individual in Uday Nagar Colony (Muslimpara) by 12 noon. For his efforts, he was promised Rs. 500 per biscuit. However, the BSF jawans intercepted him before he could complete the transaction.
The suspect and the seized gold have since been handed over to the Customs Department in Jalangi for further processing.
Public Relations Officer of BSF South Bengal Frontier, Shri Niloptal Kumar Pandey, DIG, commended the BSF personnel for their dedication and affirmed BSF’s commitment to countering smuggling activities. He urged residents along the border to report any suspicious activities related to gold smuggling via the BSF Seema Sathi Helpline 14419 or WhatsApp at 9903472227, assuring that informants will be rewarded and their identities kept confidential.
