From Rural Maharashtra to the World Stage: Army’s Samadhan Thorat Completes IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship
From hotel work and a farming family to Para Commando training and international endurance sport, Samadhan Babasaheb Thorat has built an unusual sporting journey within the Indian Army.

Samadhan Babasaheb Thorat, an Indian Army soldier from Maharashtra, has completed the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Nice, France, marking a major milestone in an endurance-sport journey that began only in 2023.
Thorat, who hails from Sonke village in Pandharpur taluka of Solapur district, comes from a farming family. Before joining the Army, he had also worked in the hotel sector.
He joined the Indian Army on May 4, 2018, and underwent his military training at the Army Service Corps (ASC) Centre and College in Bengaluru. In 2021, he successfully completed Para Commando training at 622 ASC Para in Agra.
Cycling Hobby Turns into Endurance Sport
Thorat began cycling recreationally in 2023. What initially started as a hobby gradually developed into a broader interest in endurance disciplines, including ultra running, ultra cycling and triathlon. (UNI)
He has been posted at the ASC Centre and College, Bengaluru, for the past two years. During this period, his sporting ambitions received an important boost after he met Colonel Jangvir Lamba, an IRONMAN finisher.
Lamba introduced Thorat to the IRONMAN 70.3 format and encouraged him to attempt the demanding endurance competition. Thorat subsequently began preparing for the IRONMAN 70.3 Goa 2025.
Goa Performance Opens the Door to the World Championship
Thorat’s performance at the 2025 IRONMAN 70.3 Goa secured his qualification for the 2026 World Championship in France.
Official race data records his Goa performance at approximately 5 hours 28 minutes, placing him fourth in the M25–29 age group. His recorded splits were 36:18 for swimming, 2:58:43 for cycling and 1:44:05 for running. (Iron Manage Group Series)
The result earned him a place at the 2026 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Nice.
Completing the World Championship in Nice
On September 13, 2026, Thorat competed in the World Championship in Nice, France, completing the event in 6 hours, 2 minutes and 49 seconds. The result was reported by UNI and other reports covering his journey from military service to international endurance competition.
His progression from recreational cycling in 2023 to competing at one of the major international events in the IRONMAN 70.3 calendar represents a rapid development in his endurance-sport career.
A Journey Combining Military Service and Sport
Thorat’s story brings together several distinct stages of his life — growing up in a farming household in rural Maharashtra, working in the hotel industry, joining the Indian Army, completing specialised Para Commando training and subsequently entering international endurance sport.
His qualification was achieved while continuing his military career, with training across swimming, cycling and running becoming part of his preparation for the IRONMAN 70.3 format.
From his first steps into cycling in 2023 to the finish line at Nice in September 2026, Samadhan Babasaheb Thorat has established a distinctive sporting chapter alongside his service in the Indian Army.
