Surge in Passenger Traffic Highlights Growing Popularity of Rail Travel in 2024-25

Railways continue to be the most preferred mode of transport for millions of commuters, primarily due to their affordability, comfort, and punctuality. In the Sealdah Division, which serves as a key hub for suburban rail services, there has been a notable 22.25% increase in suburban passenger traffic during the year 2024-25, compared to the previous year. Similarly, in the Howrah Division, there has been a robust 15.23% increase in suburban passenger traffic, highlighting the significant role that Eastern Railway plays in facilitating the daily commute of office-goers, businesspeople, vendors, and other passengers who depend on rail services to reach their destinations on time.
The Asansol Division, which serves several industrial and urban hubs, has seen a remarkable 25.55% increase in Non-PRS earnings for 2024-25 for non-suburban section. This surge in unreserved ticket sales is a reflection of the growing number of passengers opting for affordable, short-distance travel. The Asansol division is strategically located, providing connectivity to major towns in West Bengal and nearby regions. With a wide network of local and non-suburban trains, the division has become a critical link for daily commuters and travelers who prefer the flexibility of non-reserved tickets.
Likewise, the Malda Division has reported an impressive 65.88% increase in non-PRS earnings this year for suburban section. This significant rise underscores the growing reliance on rail travel for short-distance journeys in and around the Malda region. The demand for unreserved tickets is rising, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas where people prefer quick, affordable travel options to larger cities and towns. This growth in non-PRS earnings reflects the growing importance of railways in connecting communities across the region, offering them an accessible and cost-effective means of transport.
The overall surge in non-PRS earnings across Eastern Railway has been 18.02% in 2024-25, indicating a broader trend of increased passenger reliance on the flexibility and affordability offered by the railway system.
