The Linguistic Research Unit (LRU) of the Indian Statistical Institute in collaboration with the Bharatiya Bhasha Samiti, Ministry of Education, Govt. of India organized a day-long Symposium on “Unity and Commonness among Indian Languages”on15th January, 2025. The programme was inauguratedwith the Lighting the Lamp in the Seminar Room (8th Floor) of Applied Statistics Unit, S.N. Bose Bhavan of the Institute at 11 AM with the gracious presence of Prof R.C. Sharma, Dept. of Linguistics, University of Delhi as Chief Guest and he also delivered his valuable speech on this occasion.
Eminent academicians and researchers like Prof. L. Ramamoorthy, Department of Linguistics, Central University of Kerala;Dr. Rindon Kundu, Sri Sri Centre for Translation and Interpreting Studies & Communication and Indic Studies; Dr. S.S. Bhattacharya, The Asiatic Society; Prof. Bidisha Som, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Guwahati; Prof. S. Arulmozi, Centre for Applied Linguistics & Translation Studies, University of Hyderabad; Dr. Samir Karmakar, School of Language & Linguistics, Jadavpur University, focused on the India’s unparalleled linguistic diversity along with interconnectedness and unity.
The speakers explored the landscape of Indian linguistic which encompassing various language families. They emphasized on the importance of reviving Indian grammatical traditions, cultural values and celebrations. The speakers also described that Indian languages has a historical foundation shaped by classical languages such as Sanskrit, Pali, and Prakritetc. Sanskrit, in particular, has profoundly influenced many Indian languages’ vocabulary, grammar, and literary traditions. Additionally, they exploredthat how digital platforms, media and educational initiatives can effectively celebrate this linguistic interconnectedness through translations, collaborative art and literary events.
The Symposium was the platform for highlighting a rich shared cultural and linguistic heritage. Several Faculty members, Research scholars, Government employees, Scholars from Corporate Sectors, Independent researchers and Postgraduate & Graduate students joined this Symposium. The Symposium shared the linguistic features and cultural traits to appreciate India’s linguistic unity in diversity.This symposium underscored the collective linguistic, cultural, and historical legacy of India, demonstrating how shared origins, structural similarities, and cultural ties can coexist harmoniously.
