Amol Muzumdar
Amol Muzumdar: From Domestic Legend to World-Cup-Winning Coach – A real-life blockbuster Sharukh Khan movie “Chak De” like story unfolded at Navi Mumbai.
Mumbai (Nov 3, 2025) — Amol Muzumdar, the head coach of the Indian women’s cricket team, has taken center stage after guiding his side to their historic first-ever ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 triumph. His quiet leadership and steady hand have been credited with transforming the team’s fortunes.
Background & Playing Career
- Born on 11 November 1974 in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
- Muzumdar made a grand entrance into first-class cricket: on his debut for Mumbai, he scored 260 runs, a record for a debutant at the time.
- Over his domestic career, he amassed over 11,000 first-class runs with 30 centuries, yet never earned a full international cap for India.
- Having retired from competitive cricket, he moved into coaching – working with India’s Under-19/Under-23 teams, and serving as batting consultant for overseas teams and IPL franchises.
Appointment as India Women’s Coach
- In October 2023, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) appointed Muzumdar as the head coach of India’s women’s national cricket team, filling a role that had been vacant for around ten months.
- His appointment was initially met with skepticism by some because he had not played for India, but his domestic credentials and coaching experience soon began to speak.
Coaching Philosophy & Impact
- Muzumdar is described as a calm, empathetic leader who builds belief and discipline in his players rather than relying solely on loud motivation.
- Under his stewardship, India’s women’s team turned around their early tournament challenges in 2025, showing resilience, tactical clarity, and centered belief in their abilities.
- His influence extended into selection, nurturing younger players, reinforcing team culture, and instilling a mindset of ‘we can win’ which paid off in the final stages.
Culmination: World Cup Triumph
- On 2 November 2025, India defeated South Africa by 52 runs in the Women’s World Cup final to claim their maiden title.
- Muzumdar’s role was widely acknowledged: staff, players and commentators alike credited his guidance and steady presence as a key factor in the win.
- After the win, a symbolic moment of celebration featured Muzumdar recreating an iconic “Jhanda gaad diya” gesture (planting the flag), reflecting both pride and humility.
Significance & Legacy
- Muzumdar’s journey underscores the significance of coaching ability beyond international playing experience — his success suggests that domestic legends who never got their India cap can still reach the highest coaching levels.
- His win with the women’s team marks a milestone for Indian cricket: boosting the profile of women’s sport, opening pathways for future talent, and reinforcing the “belief culture” in high-performance squads.
- For Muzumdar personally, the victory fills a long-standing career void: though he never represented India as a player, he now has guided an Indian national side to a world championship — perhaps the perfect coda to his enduring commitment to the game.
What’s Next
With the trophy now secured, the focus shifts to sustaining success. Under Muzumdar’s leadership, India must now defend their title, build depth, and elevate the women’s game further — both domestically and internationally. His next challenge: translating this one landmark win into a period of consistent excellence.
In Short: Amol Muzumdar’s story is one of perseverance, quiet professionalism, and eventual vindication. From being a domestic run-machine who never got the international nod, to becoming the coach of a World Cup-winning Indian side — his journey is as compelling as his coaching has proved to be.
