India Clinches Maiden ICC Women’s World Cup Title, Beats South Africa by 52 Runs

In a landmark moment for Indian sport, the India women’s cricket team won the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 on Sunday, defeating South Africa by 52 runs at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. The victory marks India’s first-ever Women’s ODI World Cup title and ends years of near misses after ending runners-up in 2005 and 2017.

Batting first, India posted a commanding 298/7 in 50 overs. Opener Shafali Verma produced a match-defining knock of 87 runs, combining aggression with composure during crucial partnerships. Deepti Sharma anchored the middle order with a valuable 58, ensuring India crossed the psychological barrier of 280 on a slow surface.

In response, South Africa showed resilience thanks to captain Laura Wolvaardt, who struck a gritty century (101). However, India’s disciplined bowling attack maintained pressure throughout the innings. Deepti Sharma completed a memorable all-round performance by claiming a five-wicket haul (5/39), while Shafali Verma picked two key wickets with her part-time spin, dismantling South Africa’s chase. The visitors were bowled out for 246 in 47.3 overs.

The stadium erupted as captain Harmanpreet Kaur completed the final catch, sealing the historic victory. The Indian dugout stormed the field, tears and tricolours flowing freely as fans in the stands chanted “India! India!”

Speaking after the match, Kaur said, “This is not just our victory — it belongs to every girl who dreams of playing cricket. Today, India’s daughters have made history.”

Deepti Sharma was named Player of the Match and later Player of the Tournament, having finished with 22 wickets and over 200 runs in the competition. Shafali Verma’s late entry into the squad as an injury replacement turned into one of the most inspiring stories of the tournament.

The win has generated nationwide celebration, with congratulatory messages pouring in from former cricketers, public figures, and the government. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced a significant cash reward for the team, acknowledging their contribution to women’s cricket and their historic achievement.

This triumph is expected to serve as a catalyst for women’s cricket in the country — from increased investment in grassroots infrastructure to soaring public interest and viewership.

For the Indian team and millions of fans across the world, November 2, 2025 will be remembered as the night Indian women’s cricket reached the summit.
