SUCCESSFUL TESTING OF DC-DC CHOPPER CONVERTER

Metro Railway, Kolkata is going to add a new chapter in its glorious annals of 41 years as the field testing of DC-DC Chopper Project has been conducted today i.e. on 20.12.2025 at Noapara Shed with two DC traction Motors fitted on a bogie .Before that the design was verified in a laboratory after success on a computer using computer simulation. A unit of DC to DC chopper Converter was developed under guidance of IIT Kharagpur Professors and Metro Railway Rolling Stock officials.Shri Subhransu. S. Mishra, General Manager, Metro Railway inaugurated this testing of developed unit in presence of senior Metro Railway officials and professor of IIT, Kharagpur today.
In order to make the propulsion system of thirteen ICF rakes with BHEL propulsion, which are presently being operated in Blue Line, more efficient, Metro Railway has signed an MoU with IIT Kharagpur.Once this project is implemented then these ICF rakes will be capable of generating electricity at the time of braking. These rakes will consume drastically less energy and will be lighter in weight as the duty of Camshaft Controller , Equipment Box and Starting Register shall be performed by this developed unit alone .Acceleration and deceleration of these rakes will be smooth and jerk-free.
Metro General Manager has congratulated the Metro officials and team of IIT, Kharagpur led by Dr. Souvik Chatterjee and Dr. Goutam Poddar. This testing was aimed to examine whether the modified propulsion unit is capable to drive a train.
With this technology, performance of 3-phase propulsion will be obtained with the existing DC traction motor without changing the bogie to accommodate 3- phase induction. This technology, which is 100% indigenous and very much Indian will be used for the first time in any Indian Metro System.
