New Delhi, May 24, 2026: Senior leaders from the United States and India reaffirmed the growing strategic partnership between the two democracies during the “Freedom 250: Independence Day Reception” hosted at the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi to commemorate 250 years of American independence.
The high-profile event featured remarks from U.S. President Donald J. Trump via telephone, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, and U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor.
Trump Praises Modi, Calls India a Trusted Partner
Addressing the gathering over a phone call, President Donald Trump described Prime Minister Narendra Modi as “a great friend” and emphasized the strength of India-US ties.
“We’ve never been closer to India, and India can count on me 100 percent and our country,” President Trump said during the event.
Trump also praised Secretary of State Marco Rubio, calling him “the greatest secretary of state in the history of the U.S.” while reiterating his administration’s commitment to stronger engagement with India.
Ambassador Sergio Gor Highlights ‘Open Path Diplomacy’
U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor described the current phase of India-US relations as a new era driven by “open path diplomacy” rooted in the personal bond between President Trump and Prime Minister Modi.
Drawing an analogy with India’s iconic auto-rickshaws, Ambassador Gor said meaningful progress often comes through flexible and dynamic cooperation rather than predictable paths. He stressed that the partnership between the two nations is increasingly focused on “results-oriented” engagement.
The Ambassador also revealed that the U.S. Embassy in India secured approximately $20.5 billion in new investments into the United States, making it the top-performing American embassy globally in attracting investments.
According to Gor, India has also joined the “Pax Silica” initiative, while an interim trade agreement between the two nations is expected to be finalized in the coming weeks.
Rubio Calls India a Key Strategic Partner
In his first official visit to India as U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio praised the rapidly expanding relationship between New Delhi and Washington.
Rubio described India as one of the most important strategic partners for the United States in the 21st century and highlighted shared democratic values and common global interests.
The Secretary of State also spoke warmly about External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, calling him “a truly wise gentleman” and praising his understanding of global affairs.
Reflecting on his own immigrant family background, Rubio said the United States has long served as a “beacon of hope” for people seeking opportunity and freedom. He emphasized that future cooperation between India and the United States would be critical in sectors such as technology, semiconductors, artificial intelligence, energy, defense, and innovation.
Jaishankar Stresses Shared Democratic Values
External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar congratulated the United States on the 250th anniversary of its Declaration of Independence and underscored the democratic foundations shared by both nations.
Jaishankar noted that the principles of liberty, rule of law, free speech, and accountable governance articulated in the American Declaration of Independence influenced democratic movements globally, including India’s constitutional journey.
“Today’s event therefore has a particular significance. It is a coming together of those for whom democracy is in their very DNA,” Jaishankar remarked.
The External Affairs Minister highlighted the broad scope of India-US cooperation, spanning trade, defense, critical technologies, semiconductors, artificial intelligence, education, health, culture, and counterterrorism.
Jaishankar also stressed the importance of maintaining “zero tolerance” toward terrorism and emphasized the crucial role of counterterrorism cooperation between the two nations.
Strategic Partnership Gains Momentum
The Freedom 250 celebration showcased the growing convergence between India and the United States amid shifting global geopolitical dynamics. Leaders from both countries repeatedly emphasized that deeper bilateral cooperation would not only benefit their respective citizens but also contribute to global stability and economic resilience.
The event also highlighted the role of the Indian diaspora in strengthening people-to-people ties and deepening political understanding between the world’s two largest democracies.
