GI-Tagged Tezpur Litchi Makes Historic Debut in Dubai as APEDA Boosts Assam’s Global Fruit Exports

In a major boost for agricultural exports from Northeast India, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has facilitated the first international shipment of Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged Tezpur Litchi from Assam to Dubai, opening new opportunities for farmers and exporters in the region.
The inaugural consignment, weighing one metric tonne, was dispatched on June 7, 2026, marking an important milestone in promoting premium agricultural products from Assam in global markets.
Assam’s Premium Litchi Reaches International Consumers
Tezpur Litchi is widely regarded as one of Assam’s finest horticultural products, known for its bright red colour, exceptional sweetness, rich aroma and superior taste. The region cultivates several popular varieties, including Bombaya, Bilati, Elaichi, Piyaji and Sahi, each valued for its distinct flavour and quality.
The GI tag has strengthened the product’s identity and authenticity, enhancing its appeal among overseas buyers seeking premium and region-specific agricultural produce.
Export Opens New Markets for Northeast Farmers
Officials believe the successful shipment demonstrates the growing international acceptance of India’s GI-certified agricultural products while showcasing the vast export potential of the Northeast, a region rich in high-value fruits and specialty crops.
The export initiative is also expected to provide significant economic benefits to local growers. Farmers associated with the export supply chain reportedly received nearly 10 percent higher prices than prevailing domestic market rates, despite strong demand within India. The improved returns are expected to encourage more producers to participate in export-oriented farming and value chains.
Ceremony Marks Historic Shipment
The consignment was ceremonially flagged off in the presence of Tezpur MLA Prithiraj Rava, Agriculture Production Commissioner of Assam Aruna Rajoria, APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev, Sonitpur District Commissioner Ananda Kumar Das, along with representatives of DMR Green Valley Agro Fresh Pvt. Ltd., farmers, exporters and government officials.
The event highlighted the collaborative efforts of state authorities, APEDA and private stakeholders in connecting Assam’s agricultural products with international markets.
APEDA Expanding Export Ecosystem
APEDA has been actively working to strengthen agricultural exports from the Northeast through investments in infrastructure, quality certification, capacity building, export-oriented production practices and market linkages. The organisation has collaborated with state governments, Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), exporters and industry stakeholders to integrate farmers into global supply chains.
By facilitating exports of region-specific products, APEDA aims to increase value addition, diversify markets and improve income opportunities for farming communities.
Gateway to Larger Global Opportunities
Industry observers believe the successful export of GI-tagged Tezpur Litchi to Dubai could pave the way for larger shipments in the coming years and enhance the international recognition of Assam’s premium horticultural products.
