Black Panther Captured on Camera Trap for First Time in Assam’s Dulung Reserve Forest
Rare sighting underscores ecological significance of Lakhimpur’s forests and conservation efforts
Guwahati, June 15: In a landmark moment for wildlife conservation in Assam, a Black Panther has been captured on a camera trap for the first time in Dulung Reserve Forest in Lakhimpur district, marking a rare and significant addition to the state’s biodiversity records.
Announcing the development, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the sighting as “a rare and remarkable” event for the state’s wildlife. He stated that the presence of the elusive predator highlights the rich ecological value of Assam’s reserve forests and reflects the success of sustained conservation initiatives aimed at protecting natural habitats.
The Black Panther is not a separate species but a melanistic variant of the leopard (Panthera pardus), distinguished by its dark coat caused by excess melanin. Despite its black appearance, the characteristic leopard rosette patterns can often be seen under suitable lighting conditions.
Wildlife experts consider Black Panther sightings to be uncommon, as these secretive and predominantly nocturnal animals are extremely difficult to observe in the wild. Camera traps have become an essential scientific tool for monitoring such elusive species and assessing ecosystem health.
The discovery in Dulung Reserve Forest is expected to strengthen the case for continued habitat protection, anti-poaching measures, and scientific monitoring of Assam’s forests, which are home to globally significant populations of elephants, rhinoceroses, tigers, leopards, and numerous other species.
Conservationists note that the documented presence of a top predator is often an indicator of a relatively healthy ecosystem with adequate prey availability and suitable habitat conditions. However, they also emphasize the need for sustained conservation efforts to address threats such as habitat fragmentation, human-wildlife conflict, and illegal wildlife trade.
