India Strengthens Indo-Pacific Defence Cooperation with Participation in RAAF’s Largest-Ever Air Combat Exercise

By Suman Munshi | IBG NEWS

New Delhi/Darwin (Australia), July 19: Demonstrating its growing strategic reach across the Indo-Pacific, the Indian Air Force (IAF) will commence participation in the prestigious Exercise Pitch Black 2026 from July 20 to August 7 at the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Base Darwin, Australia. The biennial multinational air combat exercise is expected to be the largest in its 45-year history, bringing together air forces from across the world for advanced combat training and joint operational missions.

Exercise Pitch Black has evolved into one of the world’s premier multinational air warfare exercises, designed to enhance combat readiness, interoperability and cooperation among friendly air forces. Named after its emphasis on night flying over the vast, sparsely populated regions of northern Australia, the exercise provides participating nations with an opportunity to undertake complex Large Force Employment (LFE) missions in highly realistic operational environments.

Rafale Fighters Lead India’s Air Power

The Indian Air Force contingent comprises experienced pilots, engineers, technicians, air traffic controllers and other specialist personnel. India will field its frontline Rafale multirole fighter aircraft, supported by the C-17 Globemaster III strategic transport aircraft and the IL-78 Air-to-Air Refuelling aircraft, enabling sustained long-range expeditionary air operations.

The deployment highlights the IAF’s capability to project combat power over extended distances while maintaining operational effectiveness far from home bases. The support provided by strategic airlift and aerial refuelling assets reflects India’s growing ability to conduct integrated air operations across the Indo-Pacific region.

Largest Edition in Four-and-a-Half Decades

The 2026 edition marks a significant milestone for Exercise Pitch Black, with the highest number of participating forces since its inception more than four decades ago. Military personnel from multiple partner nations will conduct sophisticated multinational air combat missions, testing operational planning, mission execution and command-and-control procedures under challenging scenarios.

The exercise focuses on complex coalition warfare, enabling participating air forces to integrate seamlessly despite differences in aircraft, doctrines and operational procedures.

Strengthening Indo-Pacific Partnerships

According to the Indian Air Force, participation in Exercise Pitch Black 2026 will provide valuable opportunities to:

  • Enhance multinational interoperability.
  • Strengthen force integration.
  • Exchange operational best practices.
  • Validate long-range expeditionary air operations.
  • Improve coordination in multinational combat scenarios.
  • Foster greater mutual understanding among Indo-Pacific air forces.

The exercise also reinforces India’s commitment to strengthening defence cooperation and maintaining peace, stability and a rules-based security architecture across the Indo-Pacific.

Building Operational Synergy

Operating in a realistic multinational environment enables participating air forces to refine tactics, improve communication protocols and develop common operational procedures that are increasingly essential during humanitarian assistance missions, disaster response operations and coalition security initiatives.

For the Indian Air Force, such engagements offer valuable exposure to diverse operational philosophies while showcasing the capabilities of indigenous planning and advanced combat platforms.

India’s Growing International Air Presence

India has been a regular participant in Exercise Pitch Black, having previously taken part in the 2018, 2022, and 2024 editions. The continued participation reflects New Delhi’s expanding defence diplomacy and its emphasis on strengthening military partnerships with like-minded nations.

The deployment also complements India’s broader strategic engagement with Australia under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, where defence cooperation has become one of the fastest-growing pillars of bilateral relations.

IBG NEWS Analysis

India’s participation in Exercise Pitch Black 2026 represents more than a routine military exercise. It reflects the country’s transformation into a capable regional air power with the ability to deploy advanced fighter aircraft thousands of kilometres from its borders and operate alongside leading global air forces.

The inclusion of the Rafale fleet, backed by strategic transport and aerial refuelling capabilities, demonstrates the Indian Air Force’s increasing expeditionary capability and operational maturity. As geopolitical competition intensifies across the Indo-Pacific, multinational exercises such as Pitch Black play a crucial role in enhancing interoperability, strengthening strategic partnerships and preparing friendly nations for future security challenges in an increasingly complex global environment.
