Tashkent (Uzbekistan), July 19: India has scripted a historic chapter in the world of academic excellence by securing four gold medals at the 58th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) 2026, registering its finest-ever performance in the prestigious global competition. The outstanding achievement placed India jointly at the top of the global rankings alongside China, Vietnam, and an Individual Participant representing Russia.

Held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from July 10 to July 19, this year’s International Chemistry Olympiad brought together 363 of the world’s brightest young chemistry students from 93 countries, making it one of the largest editions of the competition.

This remarkable success also marks India’s best performance since joining the International Chemistry Olympiad 27 years ago, reinforcing the country’s growing strength in science education and international academic competitions.

Four Brilliant Students Bring Home Four Golds

The Indian contingent delivered a flawless performance, with every team member winning a gold medal:

  • Debadatta Priyadarshi – Bhubaneswar, Odisha
  • Harshit Singla – Mandi Gobindgarh, Punjab
  • Kabeer Chhillar – Delhi
  • Sandeep Kuchi – Hyderabad, Telangana

The clean sweep reflects the exceptional talent of India’s young scientific minds and the rigorous national training ecosystem that prepares students for international Olympiads.

Mentors Behind India’s Historic Success

The victorious team was guided by an experienced panel of scientists and educators.

The delegation was led by Prof. Subhajit Bandyopadhyay of IISER Kolkata as the Head Mentor, with Dr. Indrani Das Sen of the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) serving as Mentor.

The team was further supported by Scientific Observers Dr. Anubendu Adhikary of IIT Kharagpur and Dr. Jayasree Gopalakrishnan of NES Ratnam College, Mumbai, whose expertise contributed significantly to the students’ preparation and performance.

Years of Preparation Behind Every Medal

India’s Chemistry Olympiad programme is supported by the National Steering Committee on Science Olympiads, an extensive network of teachers, subject experts and the Chemistry Olympiad Cell. The programme receives institutional support and funding from the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India.

The success in Tashkent reflects years of systematic talent identification, intensive mentoring and advanced scientific training conducted across multiple stages of the national Olympiad programme.

India has steadily improved its standing in international science Olympiads over the past decade, with students consistently performing strongly in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and astronomy competitions.
