India’s rich linguistic and literary heritage received a landmark tribute on Sunday with the inauguration of the country’s first immersive language museum, the Museum of Word, at the historic National Library in Kolkata. Designed to celebrate the remarkable diversity of Indian languages, the museum offers visitors an engaging journey through the evolution of communication, literature and cultural expression across the subcontinent.

The museum was inaugurated by Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah in the presence of Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, senior government officials, scholars, cultural personalities and invited guests.

Located inside the iconic Belvedere House, the Museum of Word has been conceived as a unique cultural institution where history meets modern technology. Through immersive digital experiences, interactive installations, audio-visual presentations and carefully curated artefacts, the museum presents the story of India’s multilingual identity in an engaging and contemporary format.

Spread across nine thematic galleries, the museum explores the fascinating journey of Indian languages from ancient civilizations to the digital age. Visitors can discover the origins of speech and writing, the evolution of scripts, the richness of oral traditions, the contributions of legendary writers and philosophers, the development of public libraries, and the cultural exchanges that have shaped India’s linguistic landscape over centuries.

One of the museum’s defining features is its extensive representation of India’s linguistic diversity, bringing together information on hundreds of languages and dialects spoken across the country. The exhibits highlight not only widely spoken languages but also several historical and indigenous languages, reflecting India’s extraordinary cultural mosaic.

During the inaugural visit, Shri Amit Shah explored the interactive galleries and experienced several digital exhibits that demonstrate how technology can be used to preserve and present cultural heritage in innovative ways. The museum combines immersive storytelling with educational content, making it accessible to visitors of all age groups.

The project has been developed in phases, with the first phase introducing an expansive exhibition space equipped with state-of-the-art display technologies. Future development will include additional galleries, visitor facilities, a souvenir centre and enhanced multimedia experiences, further strengthening the museum as a national destination for language, literature and culture.

The Museum of Word also reinforces the historical significance of the National Library, one of India’s oldest and most prestigious knowledge institutions. By integrating the preservation of manuscripts and books with modern interpretive technologies, the initiative creates a bridge between India’s literary past and its digital future.

The inauguration was attended by senior officials, academicians, linguists, authors, students and cultural practitioners, reflecting the museum’s broad educational and cultural significance.

Open to the public from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on all days except Mondays, the Museum of Word is expected to become a major cultural attraction in Kolkata as well as an important centre for learning and research. Visitors will be able to experience India’s linguistic journey through an interactive environment that encourages exploration, curiosity and appreciation for the country’s diverse traditions.

IBG NEWS Analysis

Language is more than a medium of communication—it is a repository of history, identity and collective memory. The Museum of Word represents a forward-looking initiative that combines technology with heritage conservation, making India’s linguistic wealth accessible to younger generations in an engaging manner. As languages around the world face increasing pressure from globalization, institutions such as this museum can play a vital role in preserving linguistic diversity while promoting research, education and cultural understanding. By transforming language into an immersive experience, the Museum of Word has the potential to become a landmark destination for scholars, students, tourists and anyone interested in the story of India’s civilizational journey.
