Kargil Vijay Diwas: Dr. Jitendra Singh Calls Partition a Historic Blunder, Reiterates India’s Stand on PoJK

On the occasion of the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh paid tribute to the soldiers who laid down their lives during the 1999 Kargil War and emphasized India’s commitment to national security, unity, and territorial integrity. Addressing a commemorative event in New Delhi, the Minister described the Partition of India as one of history’s greatest mistakes and reiterated that Pakistan-occupied Jammu & Kashmir (PoJK) remains an integral part of India.
The event, organized by the Jammu Kashmir Peoples’ Forum in association with the POJK Youth Forum, was held at the Kashmiri Cultural Centre in New Delhi. Member of Parliament Bansuri Swaraj attended as the Guest of Honour, while Kargil War veteran Colonel K.K. Sharma (SC, SM & Bar) presided over the programme. The gathering honoured the courage and sacrifice of the Indian Armed Forces during the Kargil conflict.
Kargil Vijay Diwas: A Symbol of Courage
Dr. Jitendra Singh said Kargil Vijay Diwas is not merely a remembrance of military victory but a reaffirmation of India’s determination to protect its sovereignty and national unity. He noted that the bravery displayed by Indian soldiers during the Kargil War continues to inspire future generations and serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance in safeguarding the nation’s borders.
Remarks on Partition and PoJK
Reflecting on India’s history, the Minister stated that the Partition of 1947 led to immense human suffering, large-scale displacement, and decades of conflict between India and Pakistan. He observed that subsequent wars in 1947, 1965, 1971, and 1999, along with cross-border terrorism, emerged from the unresolved consequences of Partition.
Reaffirming the Government’s position, Dr. Singh referred to the 1994 Parliamentary Resolution, stating that Pakistan-occupied Jammu & Kashmir is an integral part of India and asserting that its retrieval remains the principal outstanding issue between India and Pakistan.
Shift in India’s National Security Strategy
The Minister highlighted what he described as a significant transformation in India’s security approach under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to him, the country has moved from a reactive defence posture to a more proactive strategy focused on preparedness, stronger border management, and a policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism.
He said this strategic shift has enhanced India’s ability to respond to external threats while strengthening public confidence in the nation’s defence capabilities.
Development and Stability in Jammu & Kashmir
Dr. Jitendra Singh stressed that peace and development go hand in hand. He pointed to major infrastructure projects in Jammu & Kashmir, including improved railway connectivity to the Kashmir Valley, the construction of the world’s highest railway bridge, new AIIMS institutions, irrigation projects, and other developmental initiatives.
According to the Minister, these projects have improved public infrastructure, enhanced connectivity, and contributed to greater economic opportunities and social stability in the region.
Growth in Indigenous Defence Manufacturing
The Minister also highlighted India’s progress in defence manufacturing, stating that the country has significantly expanded indigenous production capabilities and strengthened its strategic preparedness. He said India’s growing defence exports and technological advancements reflect the country’s increasing self-reliance in the defence sector.
Tribute to Kargil Heroes
Concluding his address, Dr. Jitendra Singh paid homage to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the Kargil War. He urged the younger generation to draw inspiration from their courage, patriotism, and dedication to the nation, emphasizing that the spirit of Kargil should continue to motivate citizens towards building a stronger, secure, self-reliant, and developed India.
The programme concluded with tributes to the martyrs of the Kargil conflict and renewed calls for national unity, security, and continued development while honouring the legacy of India’s Armed Forces.
