GSI Marks 80th Independence Day with Focus on Scientific Excellence and Mineral Security

By Suman Munshi | IBG NEWS

Kolkata, 15 August 2026: The Geological Survey of India (GSI), an attached office of the Ministry of Mines, Government of India, observed the 80th Independence Day with patriotic enthusiasm at its offices across the country. At the GSI Central Headquarters in Kolkata, the programme began with a rendition of “Vande Mataram”, followed by the hoisting of the National Flag by GSI Director General Smt. Varsha Ashok Aglawe in the presence of senior officials and employees.

Addressing the gathering, Smt. Aglawe paid tribute to the freedom fighters whose sacrifices laid the foundation of independent India and urged the GSI fraternity to strengthen its contribution towards the national vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.

Reflecting on GSI’s legacy spanning more than 175 years, she highlighted the organisation’s contribution to geological mapping, mineral exploration, geohazard assessment, geoscientific research and the generation of scientific knowledge supporting India’s development.

Focus on India’s Mineral Security

The GSI Director General underlined the organisation’s growing role in strengthening India’s mineral security. Following implementation of the framework under the MMDR Amendment Act, 2015, GSI has handed over more than 730 Geological Reports and Geological Memorandums to the Central and State Governments.

Of these, 199 reports concern Critical and Strategic Minerals, reflecting the importance of GSI’s exploration work in expanding India’s mineral resource base and supporting greater self-reliance.

Critical and strategic minerals have become increasingly important for India’s industrial and technological ambitions, particularly in areas such as advanced manufacturing, renewable energy, electronics and other emerging technologies.

Technology Driving Geological Exploration

GSI is also expanding the use of advanced technologies to make mineral exploration more efficient and data-driven.

According to the organisation, its exploration programmes increasingly incorporate Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Mineral Prospectivity Mapping, Predictive Geological Mapping and drone-based magnetic surveys.

These technologies are expected to help geoscientists identify prospective mineral zones more efficiently while improving the quality and speed of geological investigations.

Marine Exploration and Geohazard Studies

Smt. Aglawe also highlighted GSI’s work in marine exploration, geohazard assessment and digital dissemination of geoscientific information, along with scientific collaborations aimed at expanding India’s geological knowledge base.

She emphasised that GSI’s personnel remain central to the organisation’s achievements and called upon officers and employees to uphold the principles of scientific excellence, integrity, innovation and national service.

She further encouraged the GSI fraternity to continue contributing towards the broader objective of building an Atmanirbhar Bharat.

Independence Day Concludes with Plantation Drive

The celebrations concluded with an “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” plantation initiative, linking the Independence Day observance with environmental sustainability.

The programme reflected GSI’s continuing role not only in geological and mineral exploration but also in supporting India’s broader development priorities through scientific research, technological innovation and responsible use of natural resources.

From geological mapping to critical-mineral exploration and advanced scientific technologies, GSI’s Independence Day message highlighted a clear priority: strengthening India’s scientific capabilities while contributing to the country’s journey towards Viksit Bharat @2047.
