Adani Arogya Mandir Takes Shape in New Town as Gautam Adani Lays Foundation Stone for 2,000-Bed Healthcare Project
Proposed medical campus to combine hospital care, medical education and research; project investment announced at more than ₹4,000 crore
KOLKATA, SEPTEMBER 24, 2026: A major healthcare project proposed for New Town moved into its construction phase on Thursday as Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani performed the foundation-stone ceremony for Adani Arogya Mandir, a planned 2,000-bed medical institution.
The ceremony took place in Action Area 2, New Town, with West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari participating in the event. Gautam Adani was accompanied by his wife Priti Adani and son Karan Adani.
₹4,000 crore healthcare investment
The Adani Group has announced an investment of more than ₹4,000 crore for the proposed healthcare complex. The project is planned to go beyond a conventional hospital, with provisions for a medical college and advanced healthcare research facilities.
According to the announcement made at the foundation ceremony, the institution is being planned as a not-for-profit medical facility with a total capacity of 2,000 beds.
Dedicated provision for economically weaker sections
A significant part of the proposed capacity is intended for patients from economically weaker sections. Half of the planned 2,000 beds — 1,000 beds — are earmarked for beneficiaries covered by state and central government health-insurance programmes, according to the project’s announced plan.
The arrangement is intended to provide access to institutional healthcare for sections of the population who may otherwise face financial barriers to specialised treatment.
Healthcare, education and research under one project
The proposed Arogya Mandir is being developed as a broader healthcare ecosystem rather than only a hospital. The planned components include patient-care facilities, medical education and research infrastructure.
The project is also expected to contribute to employment generation. The Adani Group has stated that the healthcare initiative could create more than 10,000 jobs across West Bengal’s healthcare ecosystem.
Part of a larger Bengal investment plan
The healthcare project forms part of the Adani Group’s wider investment plans for West Bengal. Gautam Adani announced that the group intends to invest more than ₹1 lakh crore in the state by 2035.
The broader investment areas identified include ports, logistics, power generation and distribution, roads and bridges, ropeways, green cement and hyperscale data centres.
Foundation laid, hospital not yet operational
The September 24 event marks the beginning of the project through its foundation ceremony. The 2,000-bed hospital is therefore a proposed facility at this stage and should not be described as an operational hospital or as having been inaugurated for patients.
Earlier reports had described the New Town project as a proposed 2,000-bed hospital, with half of the beds intended for economically weaker patients. The latest announcement has now put the healthcare investment at more than ₹4,000 crore and expanded the project’s publicly described scope to include medical education and research.
