KOLKATA, India: The Fest5 International Film Festival 2026 (F5IFF’26) is scheduled to take place in Kolkata from 20 to 24 November 2026, bringing together cinema, cultural diversity, environmental awareness and youth engagement under the theme “Culture for a Cause.”
The third edition of the festival aims to expand its reach through international collaborations and a broader multi-venue programme. According to the festival’s published brochure, the event will use cinema as a medium to encourage dialogue on climate change, environmental protection and the preservation of cultural heritage.
Cinema as a Platform for Social Change
F5IFF’26 seeks to position filmmaking as more than an artistic pursuit, highlighting its potential to communicate pressing social and environmental concerns. The festival’s programme is designed to encourage audiences, particularly younger generations, to engage with questions of sustainability, cultural identity and collective responsibility.
The organisers also plan to strengthen the festival’s international engagement, with France designated as the spotlight country for the 2026 edition. French films are scheduled to be screened with free entry, offering audiences an opportunity to explore French cinema and deepen Indo-French cultural connections.
Empowering Young Filmmakers and Storytellers
Youth participation remains a central feature of the F5IFF initiative. The festival’s previous edition encouraged students and young people to participate through academic partnerships, volunteering, audience engagement and opportunities to showcase independent student films.
The festival brochure also highlights its commitment to supporting emerging filmmakers and recognising participating students through personalised electronic certificates. These initiatives are intended to encourage young people to develop their creative skills and take an active role in cultural expression.
Connecting Communities Through Film Education
F5IFF’s outreach activities extend beyond festival screenings. Its published material describes filmmaking workshops conducted in collaboration with Life Project 4 Youth (LP4Y), an international organisation supporting young people facing difficult circumstances.
Through these workshops, participants are introduced to the filmmaking process, including developing ideas, writing scripts, operating cameras and sound equipment, and editing footage. The initiative aims to help young people communicate their lived experiences and document environmental challenges affecting their communities.
Building on the 2025 Edition
The festival’s 2025 programme featured discussions on environmental degradation and the loss of cultural heritage. A talk show titled “Cultural Roots – Future Wings,” held on 7 September 2025, brought together voices from environmental advocacy, cultural policy and industry.
The brochure identifies panellists including Dr. Kalyan Rudra, Gauri Basu, Dr. Swati Nandi Chakraborty and Indroneel Goho. Climate campaigner Ajay Mittal moderated the session, which also featured young climate advocates Rischita and Rishima Chatterjee.
The 2025 edition also included cultural performances, recognition of national and international filmmakers through 30 awards, and collaborations with academic institutions and cultural organisations. The festival’s organisers intend to build on these activities in 2026 by expanding participation and strengthening international partnerships.
Collaboration with the Anthropological Survey of India
The F5IFF’26 promotional brochure identifies the Anthropological Survey of India (AnSI), under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, as a collaborating institution. The festival’s stated priorities include cultural preservation, heritage, youth participation and global dialogue.
The proposed programme reflects an effort to bring filmmakers, students, cultural practitioners and audiences together around issues that connect artistic expression with wider social concerns.
Looking Ahead
With its focus on culture, environment, heritage and youth, F5IFF’26 aims to create a meeting point for creative expression and public engagement. Its November programme is expected to build on earlier editions by broadening international participation and encouraging conversations about a more sustainable and culturally aware future.
