Apollo Multispecialty Hospital Triumphs in Life-Saving Battle against Melioidosis of a US citizen of Indian origin

In a remarkable turn of events, Mr. Sai Krishna, a US citizen of Indian origin, recently underwent a life-saving medical journey at Apollo Multispeciality Hospital, Kolkata. His struggle against the deadly bacterial infection, Melioidosis, and subsequent complications showcased the power of collaborative medical expertise and cutting-edge technology.
While travelling from Vietnam to Kolkata Airport, Mr. Sai Krishna fell critically ill and was swiftly transported to a nearby hospital. Despite prompt ventilator support, his oxygen saturation remained distressingly low, and his blood pressure failed to stabilize even with high vasopressors. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the medical team initiated a call for Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), a highly advanced life support system.
Under the guidance of ECMO and Critical Care Specialist, Dr. Arpan Chakraborty, ECMO was rapidly initiated within 30 minutes of arrival at Apollo Multispecialty Hospital. This critical decision marked the turning point in Mr. Sai Krishna’s battle for survival. His case required a multidisciplinary approach, and he was placed under the care of renowned experts including Pulmonologist Dr.Asok Sengupta, Nephrologist Dr.Sandip Bhattacharyya, and Infectious Disease Specialist Dr. Bikram Das.
“Melioidosis is a deadly bacterial infection that can cause pneumonia and septic shock, with the potential to claim lives within 24 hours,” explained the ECMO physician and critical care specialist at Apollo. Despite the odds, Mr. Sai Krishna’s determination and the relentless efforts of the ICU staff and medical team led to signs of recovery after a week of intensive treatment.
After successful ECMO support, a specific antibiotic regimen was administered in conjunction with the multidisciplinary care plan. Mr. Sai Krishna’s condition improved steadily, leading to the removal of ECMO support. His journey of healing was marked by his family’s gratitude towards the doctors and medical professionals who had saved his life in a city far from home.
Krishna Mahesh, the elder brother, conveyed the family’s sentiments, stating that they were extremely frightened by the swift deterioration in his brother’s health. He expressed gratitude towards the doctors at Charnock for providing the right suggestions and to medico Arpan Chakraborty for his prompt response. The family felt overwhelmed by the medical care and support they received in a city where they lacked any connections.
Following three weeks of intensive therapy, Mr. Sai Krishna was discharged from Apollo Multispecialty Hospital in a favourable condition. He is now preparing to return to California within the next couple of weeks, a testament to the power of medical expertise, advanced technology, and unwavering hope.
